French director and producer René Clair's film noir murder mystery And There Were None (1945) crafts an enthralling adaptation of author Agatha Christie. Clair's direction is so compelling, playful, and moody. Setting us on a dreary island, with constant rain, isolated from all others. It's much better than in the awful 80's version on a safari in the desert. Clair lets you get to know each person quickly and get right to the killings in this haunted house. Screenwriter Dudley Nichols adapts Agatha Christie with witty jokes on top of her iconic murder mystery tale. Christie's writing is deadly sharp with a neat story with a madman picking party guests off one by one. Barry Fitzgerald is stalwart and charming as the old Judge Francis J. Quinncannon with his own agenda. Walter Huston is steadfast as the worried Dr. Edward G. Armstrong. Louis Hayward is great as the suspicious hunter and explorer Philip Lombard with his own dark past. Roland Young is nervous and funny as the goofy Detective William Henry Blore. June Duprez is gorgeous as the sweet and endearing lady Vera Claythorne. She's elegant and posh with a natural concern. Russian actor Mischa Auer is hilarious as the laugh riot Prince Nikita "Nikki" Starloff. His playful singing is funny and his delicate piano playing is lovely. He just casually admits to running over two people with his car. C. Aubrey Smith is excellent as the near deaf and senile General Sir John Mandrake, who sent his wife's lover off to die during the war. Judith Anderson has a mean snarl as the ruthless lady Emily Brent. She's a fun snoop with her harsh snobby attitude. It's funny when she's knitting and grabs the yarn from the cat. Richard Haydn is forlorn as the dreary butler Thomas Rogers. His slow drooping voice is hilarious. No wonder he voiced the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland. Queenie Leonard is hysterical as the panicked maid Ethel Rogers. Editor Harvey Manger has slick cuts that keep And Then There Were None down to a tight 98 minutes. It's a simple enough story and very carefully edited with a fast pace. Cinematographer Lucien N. Andriot uses swift camera pans and striking framing. I loved all the shadows cast over everyone. Art director Ernst Fegté makes this manor spooky, shows up seaside ocean views, and ensures shadows fall on everything for a dark atmosphere. Set decorator Edward G. Boyle puts fancy wooden furniture throughout the mansion. Composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's dark and dreary film score with a plucky symphonic tune. The piano and string parts are fantastic. Sound designers Arthur Johns and Corson Jowett capture voices fairly clearly with atmospheric wind rustling. Costume designer René Hubert gives each actor and actress very luxurious clothes. Phillip's walking has made him grow on me like infectious foot fungus. I HATE VERA SHE SHOULD DIE A SECOND TIME IN A HOLE! Justice should not have been the murderer he had such cute puppy dog eyes those aren't the eyes of a murderer. 10/10 Ethel's fainting was amazing.
