      Critics Consensus

Anna finds writer-director Luc Besson squarely in his wheelhouse, but fans of this variety of stylized action have seen it all done before -- and better. Read critic reviews

Luc Besson knows how to direct action and this film is no exception but the film skips ahead and backwards and it gets hard to keep up. Three hundred people easily die in this film and the violence is fairly graphic. The redeeming quality is the lead actress Luss who carries the film. Helen Mirren is wasted as is Evans and Murphy. 03-22-2020

From Luc Besson comes the action-packed spy thriller Anna. The story follows a Soviet spy named Anna Poliatova who poses as a fashion model but is secretly an assassin; however when she learns that she's been lied to by her handler she attempts cut a deal with the CIA and get out of the spy game. It's kind of a formulaic and cliché plot (with the whole sexy female spy thing), but Besson manages to spice it up with a non-linear narrative that uses flashbacks to reveal the twists; which helps to heighten the suspense. Newcomer Sasha Luss gives a solid performance and handles the stunt work quite well, and she's backed by a strong supporting cast that includes Helen Mirren, Luke Evans, and Cillian Murphy. Additionally, the fight sequences are dynamic and exciting. While its bit derivative and recycles a number of spy tropes, Anna manages to be an entertaining film that delivers a few surprises.

If Red Sparrow was the crap version of Atomic Blonde, when the Hell does that make the crap version of Red Sparrow? ...Fuckin' Anna I guess.

Luc Besson takes another ride on his poor-girl-becomes-badass-assassin bicycle. He's given this bike lots of gears, err, plot twists, to keep things interesting. These pictures must be profitable else why return to the formula time and again?
