Jealousy, hate, and murder. I loved the plot, executed in an interesting old world village, with the nosy neighbor to keep you on edge. This is version of the play Deadlock (the playwright is in the movie playing the Vet). The movie is ok but is made watchable by Bette Davis having fun with it (Gary Merrill the Male lead was her husband at the time). 3 stars out of 5. Side note why is it playwright instead of playwriter....a playwright should be a ghost who haunts old theaters. Many reviewers quibble about the plot. Plots are just one element of a film and this plot is basically good and filled with authentic human emotions. Bette Davis is outstanding and the chemistry between Bette and husband Gary Merrill is like watching two tigers go at each other. Many reviewers review the discontent during production.
