Jessica Baxter Hammer to Nail An excellent first effort into narrative storytelling for Okada and Taylor. Dec 6, 2019 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation It's a sci-fi "fairytale," a I guess. And as such, it's sorely lacking. Rated: 2/4 Dec 2, 2019 Full Review Zoe Crombie Film Inquiry I was consistently brought back by the chemistry between Libby and Marco, the fascinating concept at the heart of the film, and the ambivalent critique of anthropology and ethnography that went alongside it. Nov 30, 2019 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy There isn't much about Anya that's predictable. It's a love story, family drama, and science experiment all rolled into one. Rated: 3/4 Nov 26, 2019 Full Review Carissa Pavlica TV Fanatic This love story packs an emotional punch with the help of science. Rated: 4/5 Nov 20, 2019 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Anya is a smart little film which will leave you wondering what surprises might still be in store for us in the real world. Leticia q Uhhh… thats weird🫠🫠 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/05/23 Full Review Stephen G Eighty minutes that seemed like 180. Provocative premise, but it's all downhill from there. As a science fiction story and social commentary, it's really blah. As a romance, there's a lack of chemistry. The acting is a mixed bag, with the male lead in desperate need of acting lessons. And even some of the ethical judgements the characters make toward the end are highly questionable, though by that point I didn't care at all. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/26/21 Full Review Audience Member Original premise and narrative, great acting and chemistry, and has real heart. This is a great film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member As a scientist and daughter of immigrants, this subject matter really intrigued me. And I wasn't disappointed. Okada and Taylor sensitively and entertainingly probe sensitive issues of our time, and what more can we ask of art? I recently streamed this movie and, lucky me, I'll be watching it again at the Inwood Art Works film festival. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Love, science, race, culture, and ethics brilliantly woven together in a unique and touching way. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member We need more smart, detailed science fiction like Anya. The idea -- a couple's infertility issues turn out to be caused by the fact that one of them is a genetically distinct species of humans -- forces us to consider what it is to be human, how we define species, and how we as a society would treat a subspecies. It's a superb thought experiment set in NYC, and I only wish the film were longer so we could delve more into the background of this species called the Narval and their cultural norms. The filmmakers focus on the Narval belief called 'the curse' which is the belief that those who leave the community will not have kids. Of course this is based on their inability to breed with the general population. But there were others hinted at, and I wanted to dig in more. I thought the acting was excellent, the pacing of the film was brisk, and the music in particular evoked the beating heart of NY's different immigrant enclaves. Excellent science based drama.
