Audience Member Amazing danish film about war p, very realistic Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A well-made Danish war film. Both the viewer in hindsight, and probably the soldiers involved in the engagement, are well-aware of the ultimate outcome of the brief but overwhelming German invasion. Nonetheless, the Danes, far less well-armed and with virtually no supporting air or armor, put up a spirited resistance. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Edward L Low budget, but still very well done. Acting, props well definitely up to par. Story is one of perseverance even when all seems lost. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/14/19 Full Review Jack C I really enjoyed the escalation from the beginning to the climax. The border guard scene gave me chills. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/19 Full Review Martin G 9. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/01/18 Full Review Ola G During the night of 9 April 1940, the Danish army is alerted that the German army has crossed the border and Denmark is now at war with Europe's strongest army. In South Jutland a Danish bicycle infantry company and a motorcycle platoon is ordered to hold off the German advance until reinforcements can arrive but are quickly overwhelmed by superior German forces. During the morning Second Lieutenant Sand (Pilou Asbæk) and his platoon of soldiers battle the Germans and then retreat to Haderslev... "April 9th" is well made, nice cinematography, solid authentic feeling and vibe (uniforms, environments, vehicles etc) with an intriguing and sad real background story. This is a bit of a different piece of film within the WWII genre. The focus is not the usual battle settings in Germany, England etc, but the focus is on the invasion of Denmark that took just a few hours before it was over. The danish army was unequipped and ill prepared for an invasion that almost looks comical, but was as real as it could be. However, despite an interesting true background story with a budget to manage an authentic look and feel, "April 9th" never grasps you and touches you emotionally the way I hoped it would. Trivia: - The film's budget was 22 million Danish krone (just over $3 million) and was supported by the Danish Film Institute, TV 2 and the Haderslev Municipality. The film was released in Danish cinemas on 12 March 2015. - The german codename for the invasion of Denmark was "Weserübung". Weser being the name of a river in north Germany, and übung meaning exercise. - The primary reasons for invading Denmark were to use the country as a 'spring-board' to invading Norway and to secure a route for Swedish iron ore. - While the bicyckle troops might seem a bit unpractical - such units where actually quite common in many countries at the time.
