Critics Consensus

Army of Thieves doesn't reinvent the heist thriller, but director-star Matthias Schweighöfer proves an appealing presence on both sides of the camera.

There are snappier heist movies, but for viewers in search of a capering good time, Army of Thieves is a fairly safe bet.

Helen O'Hara Empire Magazine A prequel that benefits from being only loosely connected to anything we've already seen, this is a fun, light romp that leans on likeable characters rather than CG spectacle. Rated: 3/5 Dec 3, 2021 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It moves very quickly and it's sharp. Nov 6, 2021 Full Review Robert Daniels Polygon Schweighöfer's prequel loses the winning combination this charming character possessed in Snyder's flick, in lieu of a yawn-inducing vault toward nothingness. Nov 2, 2021 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net Army of Thieves is like the more gifted younger sibling that tries too hard to imitate their more successful elder, even when their own talents could outshine any competition. Rated: 3/5 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Zach Pope Zach Pope Reviews A fun delightful heist movie that adds more to the world of the Army of the Dead & one of its characters. Was the film needed? No but was it delightful? Yes Jul 26, 2023 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Army of Thieves is an enjoyable diversion with a winning performance from Matthias Schweighöfer and a stunning lack of purpose. Amir S This is a funny and wild children's movie with several interesting twists. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/05/24 Full Review Gary L it was on the whole a quirky little piece. The plot was ludicrous, but undertaken with enough whimsy and sincerity to pull it off. The action sequences were well done and well paced, and, I will admit it, the two leads had enough spark to make me wish the movie could have stayed with the suspension of disbelief a scene or two longer and given me a bit of a happier ending. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review Lucas G I didn't find out this was a prequel to Army of the Dead until after watching, so I can't speak to its continuity, BUT as a stand alone film it's pretty good! Sebastian is so cutely awkward that it's a joy to see him bumble through crimes just for the excitement of lockpicking. The film doesn't take itself TOO seriously which plays well with the visuals and dynamics of the entire cast. If you like heist style films and enjoy a bit of comedy, 100% recommend giving this one a try Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Josipa K Such a stupid film. Waste of time. Don't watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Anindhita A a very enjoyable to watch heist movie with fast pacing and engaging storytelling. really like the main character—guess i just have a thing for aloof nerdy people. would love to see more of Dieter and how he fits into the franchise Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Andrew J Fun and exciting. A bit too sappy at times, but overall an exciting adventure with one of the most enticing characters from the Army of the Dead. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
