What to Know

Critics Consensus

Diego Boneta and Monica Barbaro are appealing, well-matched leads -- here's hoping they reunite for a picture better than the strained and predictable At Midnight.

Samantha Bergeson IndieWire There is nothing different or new here. Does there need to be? Not always, but when there are fizzier and better rom-coms out there, why waste the time? Barbaro and Boneta are better than this. Rated: D+ Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Courtney Howard Variety While a few of its lighthearted notions are genuinely timeless, its underlying commentary feels a tad regressive. Feb 10, 2023 Full Review G. Allen Johnson San Francisco Chronicle Barbaro... proves with seemingly effortless charm that she can carry a rom-com, and with daffy scripts like these, she and her castmates have some heavy lifting to do. But they are up to the task. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Maxance Vincent InSession Film The movie fails to deliver a genuinely heartfelt romance anchored by two great stars. Rated: D- Mar 6, 2024 Full Review Erik Childress Movie Madness Podcast At least the residuals to Notting Hill should continue to flow in nicely thanks to this screenplay. But you should just watch that charming comedy as those are two words that rarely come up in this one. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 19, 2023 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (LAist) It's very forgettable, but it's fluffy fast food and Monica Barbaro is something special. She's got amazing presence and magnetism. frederick c Wasn't the greatest film in Hollywood, predicable and the script was lacking at times. At times it was okay but then quickly fell afterwards. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/02/23 Full Review Pete J Very enjoyable, look for the cliches of all romcoms but it is well done. Monica Babaro incredible, a delight to see her in this kind of films. Diego Boneta, good business to start producing, for me it is well achieved. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/27/23 Full Review David M Monica Barbaro is a movie star! Very watchable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Christian K The stars have good chemistry. The movie is very tame and none of the plot does anything to inspire any confidence that this is more than just a standard filler rom-com. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Hans G Great movie, great casting, the story is heartfelt and not depressing with a lot of original comedy. Reminded me a lot of Woman on Top with Penelope Cruz and Murilo Benicio. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Paul A As "At Midnight" (2023 release; 99 min.) opens, we see a clip of the latest superheroes movie "Super Society", starring Adam and Sophie, also an item off screen. Alas, Sophie finds out that Adam is cheating on her. When the movie production moves to Mexico, we are introduced to Alejandro, the hotel's assistant manager and all-around good guy. It's not long before Alejandro and Sophie run into each other... Couple of comments: this is the 2nd feature length from director Jonah Feingold ("Dating & New York"). Here he brings us a romcom that is as breezy and pleasant as it is utterly forgettable and predictable. The movie's opening credits try to position the film as a 1950s-reminding romcom, perhaps even as a screwball comedy (which is quickly abandoned). It certainly helps that there is good chemistry between the two leads: Monica Barbaro (also in last year's "Top Gun Maverick") as Sophie, and Diego Bonte as Alejandro. The beautiful scenery in Mexico is also a plus, and the photography takes maximum advantage of the sun light. So it's all good while you are watching it, just don't expect something memorable. "At Midnight" started streaming on Paramount+ a few days ago, just in time for Valentine's Day (of course!). If you are in the mood for a pleasant but forgettable romcom, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
