A surprisingly downbeat example of Japanese horror, with an extremely cynical view of human nature. Go to Full Review

Strange Japanese sci-fi film that seems to evoke the effects of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Go to Full Review

Blake- N @PBSAniDom May 24 Matango is a solid Japanese horror classic that stands out because of its eerie atmosphere and psychological tension. Rather than relying only on scares, the film slowly builds a sense of dread that becomes more unsettling as the story progresses. One of the film’s strengths is its isolated setting and the way it focuses on the characters’ growing fear and paranoia. The movie creates an uncomfortable mood that feels unique compared to many horror films from the same era. The creature designs and practical effects are also memorable, especially considering the time period. Even though some aspects may feel dated today, the film still manages to remain creepy and engaging through its strong atmosphere and storytelling. Overall, Matango is an effective and memorable horror film that deserves its reputation as a cult classic from Japan. It is strange, unsettling, and surprisingly thoughtful, and I rate it a 7/10. See more Bill B @RT01438538 10/18/2021 Interesting film that rises above expectations. Weird character study, and even weirder horror element as a group of boaters become stranded on a fog-shrouded fungus-filled island. Campy, slightly psychedelic, and definitely atmospheric. See more 12/03/2020 Japanese horror movie that is AWFUL and full of dumb people. "Oh, look, he ate this stuff and it made him grow this weird stuff . . . I'll eat it, too!" "Oh, we shouldn't go there and touch this stuff, so we'll go anyway!" Recalls mushroom clouds from atomic bombings. Makes you wonder what Japanese are thinking as isn't the typical stereotype that they are smart? That certainly isn't the case here. See more 11/27/2020 Matango a.k.a. Attack of the mushroom people is a great movie . I do hope you like it . It reminds Me of naked and afraid lol . See more 08/01/2020 Enjoyed this movie a lot more than I expected. If you can ignore the bad special effects, this movie is a political statement that isn't a popular opinion in the US. Interesting perspective. See more Read all reviews
