Critics Consensus

Effortlessly mixing scares, laughs, and social commentary, Attack the Block is a thrilling, briskly-paced sci-fi yarn with a distinctly British flavor.

Deborah Ross The Spectator Look, this is a nicely performed film which is kept quick and tight, but for a comic horror it's just not funny or horrifying enough. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Not only is Attack the Block wickedly entertaining, but it's also well-written, suspenseful, whip-smart and moves rocket fast. Rated: A Sep 8, 2017 Full Review John Anderson Newsday Attack the Block is essentially an action thriller and as such is effective. Oct 7, 2013 Full Review Michael Leader Den of Geek There are no red telephone boxes, awkward romantics or stiff upper lips here, just a giddy sense of invention, a freshness of perspective, and a deep understanding of cinematic style. Rated: 4/5 May 8, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Spliced with biting comedy and coming-of-age dramatic hints, this stylish blend of genres hits many varied notes and leaves the audience delighted. Peter F Decently entertaining while watching, but ultimately rather empty, with very little to say; accordingly ultimately weightless. The point of it is probably that disprivileged teens living a criminal life find a purpose when aliens attack their city and show that they can be useful members of society - and even sacrifice themselves; earning the respect they never dared dream of. Not very original and it's implemented in a superficial and loveless way, begging the question if that was the actual message the makers wanted to send with this movie (unlikely), or they saw it as a necessary evil because every movie has to have some character development & stuff. Anyway: verdict is: watchable but forgetable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review Tamara K I probably would have cheered for the kids but they were such nasty criminals I kept hoping the aliens would eat them. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Chris H I've seen this film twice now; the first time, the nasty little thugs (as I perceived them) really irritated me and I didn't like it. The second time, very recently, I took a different stance. The film tries to portray these kids as rejected by society and uses this to excuse or explain their early actions (they still rob a nurse at knife point though) and, of course, they come good in the end. If you can just take this at face value, this is an interesting story, well told and well acted. The aliens are incidental to the human story but are convincing and the film has some nasty moments. Definitely worth a watch, but the way the young hoodlums speak (in Multicultural London English) I can't imagine anyone outside the UK understanding them. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review KB B It was ok but I'd probably never want to watch it again. 91%...Hmmmm Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Prabudhjeet A I mean it is produced by Edger Wright. It has to have that Edger element a little. loved it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Johnathon W Fun twist on the alien invasion film, thanks to some fun casting and direction. The cast is excellent, with future stars John Boyega and Jodie Whitaker giving nice turns as block tenants with very different perspective (he being a thug while she a nurse). Behind the camera, writer/director Joe Cornish delivers a fun yet thrilling alien invasion film, set in the ghettos of London while throwing off some fun twists (you never learn where the aliens are from, which are cool). Overall, one of the better alien invasion films in recent memory. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
