Derek Elley Variety Neither an out-and-out actioner nor a fully realized study of the psychology of games-playing, pic is still reasonably diverting Oct 18, 2008 Full Review J. Hoberman Village Voice Among other things, Avalon may be the first movie that uses contemporary Poland as a special effect. Dec 30, 2003 Full Review Jamie Russell BBC.com Manages to create a haunting virtual world that's more mystical than anything the Wachowski brothers have offered us, blending the real and the imagined into a portentous cyberpunk fable. Rated: 4/5 Oct 23, 2002 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Pointedly abstract and elusive, it is, like many of the films of Mamoru Oshii... richly visualized, gorgeously textured, and wound around issues of dream, reality, and the levels of consciousness. nina n The best film I've ever seen, set against the backdrop of virtual reality and the way it engulfs and interpenetrates reality. The choice of light color for both universes, colors that tell us where we are, then where we are not, that exalt the silhouettes of bodies, enveloping them in an unreal halo, and finally that show us where we are no longer. But no matter how much they tell us, the viewer, we get lost in the end, too sure of the spaces they delimit. It's a much finer and deeper film than it seems to most people; just look at those scenes where we eat, where we feed our dogs... Food has a fundamental place, it binds us together, it's real. We don't eat in the virtual world, do we? This film has been labeled cyberpunk, but how strange. The director plays with images, mixing the real with the virtual, the real with the unreal, fiction with the virtual, the virtual with the unreal and with food... the reality he transforms into the virtual until we lose ourselves, then find ourselves again in a split second of understanding here, on the edge, between here and there, but where? Only one character disappointed me, and it's not so much the character as the actor chosen to play him, the director's only mistake. And then this woman, with her dog, as she feeds him. I saw it in 2001, and I still remember it. Quite simply because inhabiting several worlds at once is unforgettable, between reality and fiction, the virtual and us in the theater, with the outside world when we leave the darkened theater, for the light, or the night, of the outside world... Yes, real borders are only useful for wars. The others, whether we like it or not, belong to us. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review Umatsu O Top 3 in the worst movies I've ever seen. Do you like seeing a woman feed her cat and ride a train? Then this movie is for you. No joke, watching the protagonist silently living her dull daily routine was MOST of the movie. Literally the only good thing about it was the very last 2 seconds when a lil girl smiled like a psycho because that was interesting to see. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/23 Full Review Ed M This is great for the cyberpunk crowd. I heard so many say it make the top ten of great cyberpunk movies and I agree. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Although it is a Euro/Asian B-Movie I can't say the visionary behind Ghost In The Shell has lost his narrative, visual and atmospheric touch. Possibly a bit too slow and meditative for any mainstream audience especially today. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review cees t Less productive than watching paint dry. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member If you like watching a girl silently riding a train back and forth and then feed her cat, while absolutely nothing else happens, you'll love this!! Best part of the whole film was the last 3 seconds where a little girl smiles kinda creepy. You can just skip to that since it doesn't make sense even in context anyway.
