      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Avengement compensates for a lack of narrative originality with thrilling sequences of violent, bone-crunching action, elevated by Scott Adkins' brutally intense performance.

David W Scott Adkins is one of the very best western action actors working today, not only is he a strong dramatic actor but his physical skills are extraordinary. If you approach this movie as essentially a brutal rolling brawl punctuated with moments of drama then you won't be at all dissapointed. One of the most vicereal movies I've seen in many a year and as an exercise in sustained violence it's close to being unrivalled in terms of western made cinema. Not a movie for the feint hearted but if you're in the mood for some very full-on, hardcore fighting action then you'll not see much better than this. Adkins is fast becoming one my favourite action actors of recent years. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Nakirie R Classic campy action movie, seriously enjoyed it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Gaming N prolly the best scott adkins movie, it actually had pretty good writing and storyline Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Phil M Ripper of a flick if you're into violence and mayhem. Great action romp. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Allan C I've been going on a Scott Adkins/Jesse V. Johnson binge lately, which all got started with the excellent comedy/action film ACCIDENT MAN, and its sequel, and then moved on to TRIPLE THREAT, and the two DEBT COLLECTOR movies. What made those films work so well were terrific fight sequences and a breezy light tone. AVENGEMENT suffered from trying to play it too seriously and not pulling it off. There are still terrific fight scenes, but the film doesn't earn the dramatic impact it's aspiring to. The story has Adkins busting out of prison to get revenge on the person who put a hit out on him while in stir. The film is primarily told in flashbacks to the events building up to Adkins's escape, but this SCUM or BRONSON wannabe is a far cry from being the British gangster film it aspires to. The fight scenes in the film, and there are plenty of them, are still jaw-droopingly brilliant, but the plot, characters, and drama all seem half-baked. Still, the final pub brawl is a real showstopper and absolutely worth watching! Overall, the only reason to watch AVENGEMENT is for the great fight scenes but stick with S. Craig Zahler's far superior BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 if you want a tough, lean, mean prison brawler flick. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/22/23 Full Review ANY1aBLUE This is a horrible film. Full of nastiness from start to finish. It lacks the tongue in cheek characters of a Snatch and the balletic grace and storytelling of John Wick type films , and is therefore, just plain grotesque. Everyone is an imbecilic git - from villain to police there is no saving grace as they outdo each other to be society's worst effluent. The producer decides to try to save the crassness by outdoing competitors with even more outrageous violence, but fails as it's repetitive and silly. I've tried to rewatch it, as the ratings here have it so high, but found myself even more appalled second time around. Noel Murray Los Angeles Times "Avengement" is Adkins-Johnson's best film yet: a clever reinvention of their formula, which puts all the usual bone-crunching into a more mythic context. May 24, 2019 Full Review Chris Nashawaty Entertainment Weekly If you like watching an endless string of prison brawls and pub fights connected by the thinnest of narrative threads, then you'll be in heaven. Rated: B May 24, 2019 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter Portraying his most complex character to date, Adkins delivers a ferocious turn that proves visceral in its emotional as well as physical intensity. May 24, 2019 Full Review Brent McKnight The Last Thing I See This is a gritty, mean, down and dirty crime story about gritty, mean, down and dirty criminals. It's also Johnson and Adkins' most ambitious film to date, as well as maybe their best. Rated: A Jun 30, 2020 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed As usual, Adkins' fighting is great and his acting is, besides the aforementioned hindrances, above decent. This may not be his best work, but it's good nonetheless. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 4, 2020 Full Review Luke Whiston TheShiznit.co.uk While Avengement isn't exactly a classic in any regard, it's a step in the right direction for a new breed of British thumpfests that - if Adkins can wield his sensibilities correctly - may just begin to rival their Eastern origins.
