Audience Member "Bad Cupid" mostly plays out like a bottle episode of an early 1990's sitcom. It's characters have no depth and very little character development. It's as memorable and entertaining as a book report written by a high school student 15 minutes before class started. I mean it quite literally when I compare it to a sitcom episode. The film uses a familiar format that's so similar that it even includes short animated musical interludes between scenes that are reminiscent of the cutaway shots between scenes in many 90's sitcoms. The banter between characters isn't very natural sounding, and many of Dave's lines are just there to set up perfect responses by Morris and Cupid. The movie's dialog also frequently includes unusual pauses that are begging to be filled by the ubiquitous 90's laugh track. Maybe the director was hoping to win over audiences with nostalgia factor after being handed a script that felt like it was put together by the writers of "Saved by the Bell". One particular scene spent so much time in the same location that I was starting to wonder if the movie would ever leave the bathroom. The directors obviously felt that this scene was important enough to devote such a large amount of screentime to it, despite it's most memorable elements being the graffiti and signs on the walls. It's worth mentioning that as bad as this movie is, it's still a welcome change of pace from many direct-to-streaming movies who's sole purpose seems to be to fitting in as many "wouldn't it be cool if...." scenes as possible - regardless of whether or not they even fit into the plot. Meanwhile, Bad Cupid manages to avoid doing that and stays on track all the way to it's predictable silver bullet ending. Even though that track is thin, weak, and not very compelling. CAST - John Rhys-Davies turns in a far better performance than this movie deserves. Briana Marin plays a very limited character, but she somehow manages to make Morris likable and relatable. I'll give Shane Nepveu a pass on criticism, because even the best actors in the world couldn't save Dave's cringy dialog from sounding like a full-blown pity party. The rest of the cast delivers their lines with the same level of conviction and craftsmanship as you'd expect from a high school production.
