Matt M The Ballad of Billy Badass is the first feature film from writer/director/actor Elijah Winfrey. Filmed at various locations in the North Country and set in a dystopian future 2025 is the year. The people have overthrown the U.S. government and won. They have fallen back to a time akin to the great depression. Food is scarce, people living in ruins and they rely on an organized crime syndicate that has risen to a governing body of the 4 districts of Quad City. Patrick Burnett, co-writer of the film, plays the leather clad, shalalie wielding title character Billy Badass. The rest of the cast is filled out with local talent (including writer/director Elijah Winfrey) who we are introduced to along Billy's quest to improve his living condition and that of the district he rules. Burnett plays Billy as his name implies, a badass, but as his journey progresses we learn quite a bit about Billy and what drives him to the hope of a better existence. Winfrey puts Billy through a series of ups, downs, twists and turns along the way with the biggest twist coming at the end. Hats off to Elijah, his cast & crew for a very successful inaugural film outing. I recommend supporting this film by purchasing the digital copy. As a film buff, and student of film & theatre myself, I love to see grassroots productions using talented local people & locations we can all recognize on the silver screen. I give this film an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up and I am very much looking forward to the next outing of this troupe. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/29/23 Full Review Troy O I'm happy to have had the opportunity to view Elijah Winfrey's film "The Ballad of Billy Badass." I'll start by congratulating the entire team on their completed work as they should be very proud to have produced their film with many obvious obstacles. Set in a dystopian future where the government has been overthrown, our characters navigate a world of chaos and mayhem. With clear lines drawn between the districts in Quad City, there is a very "mob boss" type of animosity between characters in power. As viewers, we follow Billy Badass as he seeks to silence the tyrants of other districts who have abused their positions and contribute to the impoverished lifestyle of the American people. Film locations include rough terrain such as abandoned school houses and warehouses. There were some great choices made by the director to bring the dystopian future into clear view for those watching. By far, my favorite story is the underlying relationship struggle that Billy faces with his younger brother as he makes his decisions for the American people. Again, I give a hearty congratulations to all involved in filming and production. I look forward to seeing future works from this director and team. I'm very impressed and excited to see what Upstate New York can bring to the film industry. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/29/23 Full Review Dan C While the coronavirus pandemic has proved to be a very difficult time for a huge majority of us, for others, it has been a period of great creativity and procrastination. Elijah Winfrey's ‘The Ballad of Billy Badass' is a prime example of this. Set in the year 2025, the Tarantino-inspired thriller sees one mans quest for power and retribution after America descends into violent chaos following the murder of the President and the subsequent collapse of the government. Made with a budget of $5,000, this dystopian action feature was born all the way back in 2014 but it wasn't until this year that director Winfrey and his cast and crew - primarily comprised of the local talent of Massena, NY - finally succeeded in bringing their gritty vision to life. And for what it is, ‘The Ballad of Billy Badass' is a promising little movie with spirited performances and an enjoyably earnest homemade aesthetic while the passion exhibited by those involved both in front of and behind the camera stand as a defiant bloodstained middle finger aimed directly at these unprecented and unpredictable times.
