      Critics Consensus

Beckett brings a propulsive energy to its man-on-the-run story, but this rather thinly written thriller fails to consistently engage.

Renee P This was not John Denzel's best performance..I don't know if it was the lack of dialogue or stumbling around acting hurt ..Or just the plot was bad. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/23/23 Full Review Damien C Tense and atmospheric. It's also refreshing to see a movie depicting realistic fight damage. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/01/23 Full Review T T Early on in the movie, our careless protagonist gets himself and his girlfriend in a car accident, in a totally preventable tragedy. Then the movie devolves further into a series of endless nonsensical events. Fast-forward and there were a couple of plot twists in the last 30 minutes, but they all fell flat because it was already too late to save this poorly written and scripted movie. It's a messy plot and storyline that is full of holes. It just doesn't make sense or add up. There are too many unbelievable and ridiculous coincidences and events throughout the movie, especially towards the end. They are almost laughable. In the last 20 minutes, our protagonist turns into some type of superhuman vigilante. Then suddenly and abruptly you have a lousy ending. Oh, and John David Washington is a terrible actor. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/27/23 Full Review steve d Simple and unpleasant. There is no reason this film should contain that much talent. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Elise L Entertaining, some plot twist were a bit too twisty but I mean, that's the genre and I'm all for it. I wouldn't suggest to watch it if you're feeling down, so beware. I truly loved the photography more than the cinematography, the colours and juxtaposition used for the protagonist and the antagonists, the scenery palette were gorgeous. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/17/23 Full Review bryan b After being shot, stabbed, and finally dropping onto a car from a car garage like batman my suspension of disbelief that a regular guy could survive this movie ran thin. Linda Holmes NPR It could be a lot better. It could be a lot stronger as it approaches the finish. But there's something to be said for watching a guy hide in a car trunk and think, "For him, this is probably the best part of his day." Aug 21, 2021 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News "Beckett" isn't horrible but it seems uncertain as to what it truly wants to be. Rated: 2/4 Aug 19, 2021 Full Review K. Austin Collins Rolling Stone The premise is ripe; the thrills are rich; the payoff doesn't come together quite as easily as the rest. But much of what's here is good -- more interesting for verging on the ridiculous. Aug 17, 2021 Full Review Maxance Vincent InSession Film I couldn't help but be blown away by how skillful Filomarino is as a filmmaker, especially because it's his first English-language film. Go in with low expectations, and it might just take your breath away. Rated: A Mar 6, 2024 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Beckett is a throwback to 70s thrillers that’s easily dismissible. Rated: 2/5 Oct 9, 2022 Full Review Mitchell Beaupre Awards Radar As is the case with Frantic, the unique setting and socialization of Beckett gives it an idiosyncratic European flavor, a sort of arthouse spin on a generic American thriller.
