Critics Consensus

Chris Evans' directorial debut is modest to a fault, with a threadbare story and minimal style leaving his and Alice Eve's likable performances adrift in New York City with nowhere to go.

Katie Walsh Tribune News Service While this kind of tale is a fantasy for the movies, with an emphasis on realism in style and deliberately paced story, "Before We Go" suggests that it really can happen, even just for a fleeting moment. Rated: 3/4 Sep 14, 2015 Full Review Ella Taylor NPR Slight and familiar but sweet enough for Saturday night, Before We Go is the umpteenth re-up of Brief Encounter, not that there's anything wrong with that. Sep 4, 2015 Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com Very little here is special, despite the individual charms of Evans and co-star Alice Eve. Rated: 1.5/4 Sep 4, 2015 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson For the new independent film Before We Go, it's Chris Evans's turn to be be a first-timer. The promise is there, but he has a long way to go. Rated: 2/5 Feb 16, 2024 Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog Chris Evans is wise to pick a script that deals with a small cast that takes place over the course of a single night for his directorial debut. Evans and Eve have a pretty sweet chemistry and the tentative romance between them feels earnest. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 14, 2022 Full Review Mae Abdulbaki Movies with Mae Before We Go is mediocre at best and ultimately a forgettable film. Still, it's also somehow decently entertaining despite its shortcomings and occasionally drawn-out melodrama. A film best seen from the comfort of your own home. Monique P beautiful movie loved it simple but moving Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Jeffrey M As much as I love Alice Eve, this screenplay is a joke...so many mistakes in the first 5 minutes. She's running for a train to New Haven supposedly but the shot shows her chasing a subway. They then try to hail a cab to New Haven only to have the cabbie tell them it's a $1000 plus Mass. Pike tolls. New Haven is in CT obviously which is before Mass., so no tolls. I turned it off after that. Lazy writing. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review L. Carvel W The acting is good if very low key. Long drawn out movie with no real resolve and learned two people lonely at the end. Parts are sweet, fun even, but those are interspersed with long, long, long sequences of them going nowhere both figuratively and in reality. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Brenda M I actually love this movie and came across it by surprise several years after its debut. For me, it has the feel of a play and I can kind of envision how it would unfold on a stage. Can we please have more of Chris Evans as a director? I actually wanted to do the thing with the hotel room art, but all of my hotels wisely bolted their pictures to the walls. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Audience Member The film for me was a metaphor of how people in a relationship get to know each other tying together the past, past relationships, lost baggage (literally her bag is stolen with her initials, which had her ID and all her $) for some this would be a “rock bottom” with her husband also having an affair. This film also shows how two people cope with their past while entering a new relationship and coming to peace with everything individually and collectively. Often times we need someone who is able to understand us to sit with us and reflect of the journey till we make it to the next destination, as it shows they met at grand central, a train station. Together, you can choose to make space for both the lightness and dark and embrace in the experience of healing together while you were given the opportunity to walk through it with a stranger. Strangers often understand you more than people you’ve known your whole life. At the end of it all they carried so much love and support for each other however needed to start their next journeys apart. Picking up the phone for the last time and letting their former selves know that regardless of what happens they will be okay and they will make it home. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/29/24 Full Review Tom J The script was very engaging - great romantic story that was well acted by the leads. I would highly recommend it.
