This fact-based film chronicles both the personal and professional lives of noted Canadian physician Dr. Norman Bethune (Donald Sutherland). During the Great Depression, Bethune works closely with the impoverished to ensure that they get proper medical attention, and eventually weds the attractive Frances (Kate Nelligan). At the end of the 1930s, when Mao Zedong's army is overrun by Japan, Bethune uses his skills as a doctor to help care for soldiers who are fighting for the communist cause.
