Audience Member The music is way too overbearing Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the second of Kim Hunter's Budget Thrillers, the first being Val Lewton's ,'The Seventh Victim', with Tom Conway & Hugh Beaumont, directed by Mark Robson. This time she's in a King Brother's production with Dean Jagger & Robert Mitchum, directed by William Castle. It was originally released in 1944 as 'When Strangers Marry'. Orson Welles said of it, "It isn't as slick as 'Double Indemnity' or as glossy as 'Laura', but it's better acted and better directed than either." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review deke p Very interesting, and in parts 'thrilling'. Saw it on late nite Movie Channel in 2020. Now saw it again, 8.15.21, and did not remember seeing it before at all. Still interesting. Film also known as WHEN STRANGERS MARRY. DEAN JAGGER was unrecognizably young as the husband. What a difference from his older persona. BUT, we thot the main actress KIM HUNTER a bit mousy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member feels like a B picture suspenser directed by the master of ballyhoo. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A bit melodramatic for my taste, but Castle's depiction of paranoid urban life for the couple on the lam is quite effective, including a fun, race-conscious interlude in a Harlem bar. It's an interesting mix of noir and wartime paranoia with romantic themes closer to a women's film. Jagger and Mitchum are set up at cross angles as examples of masculinity, with Hunter in the middle and Hamilton (Batman's Commissioner Gordon) as the voice of benevolent, investigative authority. Tiomkin's score is excellent, alternately sweeping and tentative, the plucked strings emphasizing Mitchum's anxiety. This is a real treat for Castle fans, as an interesting cross-genre effort from him with a typically outstanding use of the small budget. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
