Steve Warren The Barb (Atlanta) It's not easy to be so bad so well, but The Big Bus has an expert cast. May 9, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Thankfully for filmgoers, Airplane! was right around the corner. Rated: 2/4 Apr 30, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies The Big Bus goes for laughs at every conceivable point but when it hits, it hits. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 25, 2023 Full Review Bernard Drew Gannett News Service You should never feel the creators desperately trying to force laughs where they don't naturally exist. That is the main problem of James Frawley's The Big Bus. Nov 4, 2019 Full Review Mark Morrison Los Angeles Free Press What we have here is a strident comedy which is wholly off-target. Oct 31, 2019 Full Review Paul Chambers Movie Chambers Before there was "Airplane," there was "The Big Bus." The granddaddy of the disaster spoof movies came out in 1976, and despite its unevenness, it's quite the hoot. Rated: B Nov 1, 2013 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Incredibly underrated comedy film. Funny and super innovative with an expert cast. Loved the actors, actresses and every single unique scene, dialogues and ideas! Just a fantastic blend of laughter, characters, context and technology! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review David P Did a blind buy of this movie largely in part to its terrific cast and what a comedic gem it is. The sheer lunacy and craziness this film displays had me laughing until it hurt. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review Audience Member The worst 01 hour: and 28 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member The funniest bus-related comedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member What a treat! This movie is a collision of Airplane, Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with a bit of China Syndrome thrown in. A young Stockard Channing is great as is a young Rene Auberjonois as the preacher. His interaction with Ruth Gordon is fantastic as are her one liners. This horror movie comedy spoof if full of rich nonstop slapstick from the obvious to the subtle - such as the first scene when they bus everyone from site to site - all some 40' away from each other. Its much richer in comedy and details and absurdities than such modern horror movie spoofs - many of which have Jumped the Sharknado. I enjoyed the fictional landscape between New York and Denver - everything was filmed within 50 miles of Hollywood in the mountains. I didn't realize the Pennsylvania Turnpike was that arid! Rent or buy it on YouTube. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Have you ever been watching a movie and quickly started asking yourself how you’ve never heard of it before? That’s what happened when I was only about 10 minutes into The Big Bus. I was laughing hysterically and trying to figure out why this movie is never listed with the great spoof movies like Airplane, Naked Gun, and Hot Shots. This film is perfect for my sense of humor, and had me laughing to the point of tears a couple times, and that is a truly rare occurrence. Now I can understand if some people aren’t as fond of this movie because humor is extremely subjective, but considering the jokes are on a similar wavelength with other parodies, fans of those films should be singing the praises of The Big Bus as much as I am. The one thing I will concede is that Joseph Bologna might not be the most compelling hero for the film, but he is totally locked into the tone of the movie. He delivers lines as if he’s in a serious action/disaster movie despite the fact that it’s a ridiculous comedy. Stockard Channing is also not your typical leading lady type, but I still felt she fit in well as Bologna’s love interest. There are a number of superb character actors throughout the rest of the cast, and I felt that everyone was given equal opportunities to get some laughs with their goofy roles. It might not be an all-star affair, but you don’t need a lot of big names when you have a script this witty. In some ways, The Big Bus feels quite derivative of Airplane, and it is clearly playing on some of the comedic ideas from that film. However, I think there’s an added layer of humor in this film based on the fact that it’s something as mundane as a bus ride. There is a level of danger and high stakes when people are flying tens of thousands of feet in the air, but this movie acts as though the same level of excitement is present in a bus that is rolling down the street. I’ll admit there are a few lulls in the humor, and it didn’t feel like the movie had a proper ending, but rather like it just stopped. Despite its flaws, it was hard to care, since The Big Bus had me laughing out loud so much, even though I was watching all alone. It was a great success for me and is a movie I now need to own.
