In 1930s Poland, Stanislaw (Olgierd Lukaszewicz) is dying from tuberculosis but is still determined to relish what life he has left. He arrives at the farm of his brother Boleslaw (Daniel Olbrychski), who is still grieving his wife's death. After Stanislaw charms the other villagers and sleeps with a winsome farm girl, Boleslaw finds himself resenting his dying brother. When Stanislaw discovers evidence that his late sister-in-law had been unfaithful, relations become even more strained.
