What to Know

Critics Consensus

Sleek in design and spiked with dry wit, Black Bag is an exemplary espionage caper that lets movie stars like Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender do what they do best -- light up the screen.

Audience Says

Blanchett and Fassbender excellently set up a play of intrigue in Black Bag, a solid Soderbergh entry that if challenging to follow at times, is mostly a satisfying match.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (LAist) It's a very brisk 90 minutes, which is always very welcome. May 13, 2025 Full Review Dwight Brown DwightBrownInk.com A smartly drawn spy tale. As sophisticated as a dry martini. Rated: 3/4 Apr 1, 2025 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian This movie is Smooth Soderbergh. It’s brisk, engaging, humorous, well-directed, written and acted. You can put your brain in low gear and sit back and be entertained. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 21, 2025 Full Review Jared Mobarak Hey, Have You Seen ...? My favorites, though, are Burke and Abela. They’re the messy couple. The emotional ones. They’re as unpredictable as potential villains as they are obvious leverage points. Rated: 8/10 May 30, 2025 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy It’s to Koepp’s credit that he wrote this from scratch, since it certainly seems as if it might have been adapted from a Cold War-era bestseller. Rated: 3.5/4 May 28, 2025 Full Review Rob Thomas Not That Rob Thomas (Substack) Rewatching “Black Bag” on Blu-ray reminded me what a clever piece of clockwork entertainment it is, with a surprising romantic heart beating underneath the machinery. Nick I liked it. It was a tightly wrapped film. There was a lot of dialogue but some reason I did not mind it and actually liked it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Quincy Slightly disappointed on what it really was about, but it was ok in terms of pace and intention. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/04/25 Full Review Michael G Always trust your partner. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Choombies The writing was solid and kept you guessing. This is also the most recent film that I recall where I cared about each of the main characters and liked their dynamics with each other especially when tension was being built up. Definitely a movie worth watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/29/25 Full Review Moviegurl Just meh. It never really got off the ground. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review tony Great actors. But, weak storyline. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Read all reviews
