Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine If every new film made today is to a greater or lesser degree an echo box of past possibilities, what's notable is how much Villeneuve gives those echoes room to breathe and to be new. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Melissa Anderson 4Columns In the end, for all its pleasures, it's difficult to view Blade Runner 2049 as anything but an elaborate echo of the original, neither true sequel nor reboot, unclear of its own identity. Oct 30, 2017 Full Review Tim Hayes Sight & Sound The film dares to be ambiguous, but ambiguity is a bad fit with the current critical mood that art must be prescriptive rather than reflective. Oct 17, 2017 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews 2049 is able to exist both as a masterful sequel and/or stand-alone film in the universe, which showcases Villeneuve’s massive skill as a storyteller and further validates him as one of the best visionaries of our generation. Rated: 5/5 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Justin Micallef Vague Visages If the original film’s warmth beneath the cold metropolitan’s structure came from Deckard’s love for Rachel, 2049 extends this ethos to a love and understanding of the self in the greater context of others. Feb 6, 2024 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Just as in the original, this film is as much about the texture of the world on screen as it is the story of the Replicants 30 years after Deckard first strolled the mean streets of L.A. B T Good follow up to Blade Runner final cut. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Michael M Very innovative and I consider it the best Denis Villeneuve movie. Dune 2 is a step backwards compared to Dune 1. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/24/25 Full Review Romas M Greetings from Lithuania. First things first - i did like "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) more then i did the first movie, and that movie was a good one on entertainment level, and amazing on its theme and craftsmanship. That said, "Blade Runner 2049" is great movie, simply wonderful one. On almost every level. Its impossible to distinguish on thing that makes this sequel great. Its the amazing cinematography by a legendary Roger Deakins to start with. It the great story and solid screenplay. Great acting by everyone involved, and great directing by a great Denis Villeneuve. Set design and special effects were simply... true - it literally takes you the place, not to mention amazing music by legendary Hans Zimmer. Take all these talent and result is very clearly seen. Overall, "Blade Runner 2049" is simply a great movie, the one that in my opinion surprised the great original. Every single shot in this is movie is a thing to be seen and admired on biggest screen possible. Great movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review Loris U Insanely good movie! I watched it the first time and didn’t really get much. I just watched it for the second time and it’s one of my favorites all time! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/23/25 Full Review HameZz O Definitely not as good as the original. Denis Villeneuve is my personal favorite director and in my opinion of the films I've seen of his this is one of his weaker ones. It feels dragged out and at the same time to compile multiple subjects and new ideas, making it feel like too much is going on. The first one had a relatively simple storyline and it worked very well. But you also can't really beat the original Blade Runner. The cinematography in this film obviously deserves the recognition it gets. I wish the original got more recognition too for its cinematography by Jordan Cronenweth. Overall, good watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Kevin P A fantastic sequel that continues and expands the themes about what makes us human and alive aside from our intelligence and the sum of our memories. The gorgeous lighting, colors, and cinematography all contributing to one of the most visually stunning movies of the decade. Ryan Gosling is great as the stoic but thoughtful character K, who's a newer replicant Bladerunner hunting other replicants. The movie has an intriguing storyline about a replicant giving birth that connects this to the original film. Unlike so many legacy sequels, this one actually feels like a real sequel instead of a redundant soft reboot. It greatly expands the worldbuilding and scope of Blade Runner while still maintaining the tone and themes of the original. I'd say it even exceeds the original with its more engaging characters, stronger cinematic direction, and better pacing (ironic cause it's even longer than the original). There's a lot of interesting new details, including holographic food for replicants, grub protein farms, San Diego has been reduced to a garbage dump, Las Vegas is radioactive yet can still support honeybee colonies, child slavery is exploited in scrap yards used for high end materials, there's a Simulation dome of nature from the past used by memory artist to give replicants memories, and most interesting is K's AI girlfriend Joi (played wonderfully by Ana De Armas). She's so bubbly and desiring to break free of her digital limitations in some truly creative and memorizing scenes such as when Joi uses a prostitute as a vessel synced to her movements so she can make love to her boyfriend in an impressive sequence that continues to hammer the themes about the human condition and what truly counts as a living sentient being. The themes are complex and nuanced without feeling too heavy handed or vague. Harrison Ford's return as Rick Deckard is also great. He appears much later in the film, but it feels like a rich story payoff rather than a cheap nostalgia gimmick. Deckard has a kickass fight and bonding scene with Ryan Gosling in the abandoned Las Vegas hotel. There are two great twists about Deckard's long-lasting children and there's great recurring themes of loneliness and human connection. The climax is very tense with the sinking flying car, followed by a rather touching ending with Rick Deckard and Ryan Gosling's character coming to terms with their families and identities. My only complaints are that they could've spent more time with Rick Deckard and Ryan Gosling's characters bonding as well as more time with the Jared Leto Villain & Replicant resistance. But in a way I suppose it's better to be yearning for more than to beg for it to be over. Though it is weird that almost every single female character in the film either dies or is a sex worker. But I still commend the movie for making the majority of its characters with speaking roles women (even if almost all of them die/fridged, though to be fair most of the characters die by the end). It's an amazing sequel, a visual masterpiece, and easily one of the best sci-fi films of the 2010s. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
