A young man and his friends venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mystery surrounding his missing sister. Many believe her disappearance 17 years earlier is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when two locals act as guides through the dark and winding woods. As the night wears on, a visit from a menacing presence soon makes them realize that the legend is all too real, and more sinister than they could have ever imagined.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Blair Witch doles out a handful of effective scares, but aside from a few new twists, it mainly offers a belated rehash of the original -- and far more memorable -- first film.

Kristen Yoonsoo Kim Complex Blair Witch is probably fascinating for young viewers who had never seen the original movie and didn't live through that hype, but for those familiar, it offers nothing new. Feb 27, 2017 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times The multiple camera angles ensure that just as dread surges -- the waiting was always the hardest part in The Blair Witch Project -- we cut away to something less nerve-wrecking. Rated: 2/5 Dec 28, 2016 Full Review Scott Tobias GQ The microphones on the tiny digital cameras shouldn't be picking up much, but verisimilitude be damned, because Blair Witch renders every snapped stick, crushed leaf, and distant guttural noise as an ear-blistering assault. Dec 5, 2016 Full Review Zach Pope Zach Pope Reviews The Best Blair Witch Film yet that will be looked at in the future as a great footnote for found footage horror movies. Aug 7, 2023 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh Takes the franchise back to its roots with its filmmaking foundation, trading in the subtleties of that debut film for abject terror for a roller-coaster ride of a film. Rated: 4/5 May 12, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A few neat ideas and effective jump-scares might entertain audiences, but the film feels like too little, and more than a decade too late. Denny B This isn’t a perfect remake of the Blair Witch Project but I actually enjoy it and admittedly, I watch it more often than the original movie. The only things I really don’t like about this is that the cinematography looks way too clean and not gritty enough. The first half of the movie is slow and the color grading isn’t good. The greenery of the forest looks too saturated in color and the characters are not interesting either. But once the action kicks in it’s great. The second half is very dark and I love it, the visuals of the abandoned house are awesome. I also didn’t mind how they physically showed the witch either. I always imagined her as more of a ghostly nun, but I really dig this grey alien-like appearance. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/01/25 Full Review Demented N They milk the gimmick from the first movie and never recaptured the magic. 6 Paranormal Activity movies later they decided to jump back on the bandwagon of that style of movie to see if there is any cash left in the cow by making a sequel! I personally hate the whole home video style movie... it was great for the first one but enough....... terrible acting, terrible writing, basically terrible camera skills as well it would have been great if they were watching the found footage and trying to piece the puzzle together. They're trying to solve the mystery but they're also making more found footage for another movie..... because the audience hasn't seen enough never heard of the actors before then again a list stars very seldom star in horror movies. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/01/25 Full Review Phantom 9 As the first film did not contain a lot of shocking jump scares either, this one still contained some moments that made me take notice. Towards the end, things did become a bit more exciting, but even then it didn't fully engage me in the narrative. Acting was passable and special effects were good overall. The witch herself looked good as a CGI character but was not terrifying like a witch should be. It was lacking in actual face-to-face confrontations the majority were concealed or edited out, and that seemed like a huge opportunity lost. Overall, this film compared to the first is actually less disturbing to watch, so I am confused why it was rated so lowly. The found footage concept isn’t really my favorite genre anyway, but even within that this film isn't good. Especially since the Blair Witch Project was actually very good and created a really creepy atmosphere. Unfortunately, this one doesn’t manage that. It doesn’t come close to the suspense of the original. The body horror scenes were the most uncomfortable part of the film and not a creepy atmosphere like in the first one. There is some more tension towards the end, which is why it wasn’t completely bad, but overall disappointing. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/21/25 Full Review Read all reviews
