Recently divorced mom Lauren (Drew Barrymore) and widowed dad Jim (Adam Sandler) let their friends push them into a blind date, which goes disastrously wrong. Unsurprisingly, neither wants to see the other ever again. However, fate intervenes when both Jim and Lauren, unbeknown to each other, purchase one-half of the same vacation package at a South African resort; they and their children are forced to share the same suite and participate in a slew of family activities together.
Although it is far-fetched and awkward at times, "Blended" is funny and delightful in many parts. Barrymore and Sandler both perform better than usual. Terry Crews shines as an over-earnest musician and manages to steal the show at times. And there's a lot of pretty Africa images to boot. This is a perfectly serviceable and pleasant rom-com for a slow weekend.

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore team up once more for the family comedy Blended. A modern day Brady Bunch knock-off, two single parent families end up sharing an African vacation together and become closer as they get to know each other. Sandler and Barrymore have good chemistry, but it's a struggle to overcome this weak script. And, the jokes a painfully obvious and really lowbrow. Still, the film has its moments; manufacturing the typical cliched family comedy tropes. A substandard rom-com, Blended is a weak outing for Sandler and Barrymore, but they manage to deliver a few laughs.

It says something about a man's filmography when this is his best movie in 4, almost 5, years. I'm talking about, of course, Adam Sandler. The film in question would be 2010's Just Go With It, a movie that wasn't even that good to begin with. Average isn't good. Also I wouldn't count Hotel Transylvania, a movie that I really liked, because animated movies are a whole other monster. And Funny People doesn't count either as that is an Apatow film that pokes fun at Sandler's choice in "projects". So the guy is aware that he produces shit and has even poked fun at himself for it. Ironically enough Sandler's "best" live-action film in about 4-5 years comes on the heels of his admittance, on an appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show to promote this movie that his films he makes are basically just paid vacations. The guy went on national television and admitted this, shamelessly. His movies are basically just an excuse for him to go someplace fancy and goof off with his friends. And he gets paid MILLIONS of dollars to do this. He gets paid millions of dollars to do nothing but make stupid dick and fart jokes. Do I think the guy is completely untalented? I wouldn't go as far, Reign Over Me and Punch-Drunk Love prove that he has some talent. It also seems to me that Sandler himself is a smart guy, which is why it's so infuriating to see him do the least he possibly can in order to get a laugh. The guy is lazy to the core and if you watch his films and you disagree with me, then I don't know what to say to you. Even if you think his films are great, do you REALLY think that they're inspired? This is is nothing against the man himself, who seems incredibly nice and loyal to his friends, which is an admirable trait to have, this is about the 'actor/producer'. So you'd think I'd be wanting to come on here and just rip the film to shreds, but I'm not. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that this is a good film, 1.5 out of 5 stars obviously says that I thought it was bad, but it's better than I was expecting for a Sandler film. Then again, I was probably spoiled by how horrible Jack and Jill and Grown Ups 2 were. Both are actually two of the worst films I have ever seen, even though Jack and Jill has a strangely funny performance from Al Pacino. So when you set the bar THAT low, you're gonna have to try REALLY fucking hard to go even lower than that, you know what I mean? Maybe that's what happened with this film, who knows? All I know is that this film, while terrible in the first 30 or so minutes, before they get to Africa, isn't as bad as I'd expect. And, at this point when you're talking about Sandler comedies, that's as much as you can hope for. He has defeated me, I've given up hope for his films to improve. With that said, the film still isn't good. I felt really bad for Drew Barrymore, because this just doesn't seem like the type of film she'd enjoy doing. Would she have done this film if it wasn't because she got to work with Sandler again? I highly doubt that. Then again, maybe she hates working with the guy and she only did it for the money. But, at least she tries somewhat. The script for the film, of course, fails her. It's more concerned with relying on cliches and slapstick than actually making an effort with truly interesting characters. The best part of the film, from a comedy standpoint, would have to be Terry Crews, who plays the lead/host of this band that follows the characters around, appearing at random points to make fun of people and sing songs.. This guy always finds a way to make me laugh any time he appears in one of these films. It's not great comedy by any means, George Carlin and Bill Hicks would be ashamed of me if I did so, but he's goofy and he gets to go off and do whatever he wants. I doubt the guy got much direction in what he should do and how he should do it. The rest of the cast is fine, it seems like they're having a good time and that, at the very least, makes the film easier to watch, even if it's not great. With that said, the pacing of the first 30 minutes of the film absolutely killed me. You're thrown RIGHT into the first date between Jim and Lauren with no rhyme or reason. The first scene of the film is of Lauren in the bathroom. If you saw the first scene of Grown Ups 2, with the pissing deer, then you'd understand how worried I was at what was about to transpire. Thankfully there were no diarrhea jokes in this scene. After the first date, you get to see Jim's and Lauren's home life and the issues their kids are growing through from frustration at sports, periods, puberty, etc, etc. And, to be honest, I just couldn't have cared less. There's no reason this movie should've been, almost, 2 hours long. It should've been 95 minutes at the most, including the credits. Have the first date be a disaster, show a little bit of their home lives, and then go straight to Africa. No reason this couldn't have been done in 15 minutes. Shorten that up so the film flows better. Get rid of about 75% of the subplots, as nobody really gave a shit, and just make it work. Trust me when I say the first 30 minutes will definitely test your patience and, if you're religious, will get you to stop believing in god. It gets "better" after they get to Africa, but that's not really saying much. I will say that they chose an absolutely beautiful location to film at, so it's also fair to consider this a full-length ad for African tourism. Really this film doesn't offer much in the way of decent jokes, nor does it really click on an emotional level. It tries, it has some level of schmaltz, but it's forced in there and it doesn't really work. I can't really recommend this movie. But, and this is perhaps the best compliment I can give this, it's not Sandler's worst. Not even close to his worst. I guess that's all I really needed to say.
An Improvement from the last couple of sour movies, when I was thinking how and why there is another Sandler/Barrymore love story, it still worked and was pretty cool.
