Jordan Cronk Slant Magazine To's ambitious amalgam of comedic trappings and grisly crime analysis is just odd enough to remain of interest. Sep 14, 2013 Full Review Neil Young The Hollywood Reporter Tiresomely frenetic crime-comedy-romance. Sep 14, 2013 Full Review Justin Chang Variety This madcap mystery-romance sustains a light, bouncy tone and a decent hit-to-miss laff ratio even in scenes involving strangulation, dismemberment and cannibalism. Sep 14, 2013 Full Review C.J. Prince Way Too Indie The overstuffed plot and 2+ hour runtime make this one of To's minor works instead of a classic, but even second-tier To is a hell of an entertaining time. Rated: 7.2/10 Jun 27, 2019 Full Review Harris Dang easternKicks.com Blind Detective is an ambitious Johnnie To entry that can wildly entertain as well as polarize people, but for those who can handle the tone shifts and the overacting will have a lot of fun. Just don't watch this film on an empty stomach. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 30, 2018 Full Review Lee Marshall Screen International Although it serves up a few laughs and a couple of set-piece scenes that To completists will want to cut out and keep, Blind Detective is a decidedly minor offering. Audience Member The rapport between Lau and Cheng is evident in what is a wonderfully funny and interesting detective escapade. It strikes a good balance between the typical Hong Kong humour and romantic storyline. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member There are parts and certain scenes in the movie that were top notch as far as storytelling and filmmaking goes. However, I can't say I agree with its storytelling logic or some trivialization of the blind. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Blind Detective, from Johnnie To, meshes together two genres that seem as if they aren't made for each other.
With a story over 2 hours which displays a hybrid of a romantic comedy and a crime thriller, Blind Detective is quite the viewing. On one hand, it's hard to take seriously, while on the other hand, it's meant to be taken seriously.

The over the top scenes and the playful acting of the romantic comedy somehow manages to share screen time with the investigative crime scenes. There really isn't much in the way of action, but the concept of the story is intriguing enough to hold attention.

Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng do have solid chemistry together, although the overacting is a bit of an annoyance. The rest of the cast falls into the shadow of the two leads.

Blind Detective isn't a unique masterpiece; however, it is watchable for what it is.
Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a love story...not a detective movie... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Enjoyed these 2 movie actors interacting with each other but there's no chemistry though during the whole movie. The movie is too long in summarizing the conclusion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member i actually believe that i like this. frentic, madcap, crazy is not something you expect from Johnnie To but the slapstick worked. nevermind the loose plot at the end but with a title like that and a poster of Andy Lau holding skull and a gun; one would expect "Bone Collector" but i was surprised ....wait a minute does the genre on RT say Arthouse?
