In a small southern town where the high school football team is a huge source of local pride, Dwayne Birdsong (Ben Johnson) has painstakingly trained and groomed his son, David (Gary Busey), to be the team's star. Both father and son are hopeful that David will earn a sports scholarship to a major university, but team coach Marshall (Larry Hagman) is concerned about his star's future. Marshall cares only about having a winning season, even if it means compromising David's health and dreams.
