Andrew Stover Film Threat Despite questionable creative decisions, particularly when deciding the fate of Layla, Bloody Romeo is a disturbing, cautiously erratic, and grueling love story like no other. Rated: 7.5/10 Aug 12, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Martine M The title of the movie is Bloody Romeo and is written, directed, and stars Mukesh Asopa. The movie setting is an interesting take on the traditional story of Romeo and Juliet. Asopa's character, Romeo, is described as a writer, content with a quiet single life and haunted by some repressed childhood trauma and insecurity. The theme of this movie is a difficult subject for most people, suicide. Strange unexplained incidents begin to happen in the city and unfortunately, these suicidal events become increasingly prevalent, which is genuinely concerning to the community with media coverage only focused on exploitation. Aunt Nice, Romeo's favorite and closest family member is a breath of fresh air. Tracey McLean-Low portrays an enthusiastic, compassionate woman who truly loves her nephew and wants him to live a happy and fulfilling life. McLean-Low exudes this love in her performance and brought life to the story. Aunt Nice encourages Romeo to get out of his solitary life and find romance. Romeo interacts with many characters throughout the film, and he appears to have a hidden gift or power of persuasion with some positive outcomes and others seem to have a tragic ending. In the next few scenes Romeo meets Layla and a romance blossoms. The relationship is described as love at first sight but there is a sinister feeling that Romeo is holding a secret. The viewer is then led to a series of scenes where groups interested in suicide prevention discuss the large-scale and wide-ranging increase in suicide and the need for answers. Shortly after, Romeo is publicly revealed to be the hero behind suicide prevention and his family and friends are shocked and delighted that he has come forward from his shy, recluse lifestyle to be recognized for this valiant deed. But is this really the truth? In a misunderstanding, a conflict arises between Layla and Romeo. Romeo has a surge of unfounded jealousy, triggered by his unresolved trauma utilizes his power of hypnosis over Layla and sends her into a trancelike state and she spirals into trying to end her life. The plot thickens when Romeo thinks Layla has died, and in his panic, believes he has lost his "Juliet" and kills himself by drinking a powerful poison and lies next to her. Upon awakening, Layla cannot bear the sight of dead Romeo and stabs herself with a piece of broken glass and joins him forever in a loving embrace. My critique of the film is that the acting at times, could be perceived as hollow by some of the actors, whether that was intentionally portrayed that way to create intensity or was just unimaginative acting I could not determine. Asopa's character felt stiff, and the script was forced to add too many unnecessary details, but in spite of that, you could not help yourself to want to understand Romeo and the root of his obvious childhood wounds. Flashbacks were very helpful to explain his upbringing with twists and turns without giving away the ending. The movie did not have graphic content for shock value which I appreciate but the film is still not suited for all audiences. Special effects were limited and the sound cuts in and out from time to time. The length of the movie was two (2) hours which was a bit excessive to tell what needed to be told. The production could be improved through editing; however, the overall composition was good, and the story had some twists that kept the viewer curious.
