What to Know

Critics Consensus

While not the flashiest Richard Linklater film, Blue Moon boasts a wonderful performance by Ethan Hawke as he embodies a man hanging on by a thread while the audience hangs on to every word said.

Sergio Burstein Los Angeles Times Blue Moon avoids the typical pitfalls of the biopic to take on a format that can sometimes feel a bit theatrical, but ends up placing us face to face with a creator as conflicted and contradictory as he is complex and fascinating. [Full review in Spanish] Oct 28, 2025 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News There's so much rage, bitterness and regret stirring just below the surface of Hawke's raw performance that it makes "Blue Moon" feel much bigger than it is. It's a minor film that packs a major emotional punch. Rated: B+ Oct 28, 2025 Full Review Peter Travers The Travers Take Linklater's film belongs heart and soul to Ethan Hawke, who delivers a tour de force that swerves from hilarity to heartbreak, sometimes in the same scene. It's a tragedy that unspools with astonishing buoyancy and sneaky wit. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 28, 2025 Full Review Tony Medley CWEB.com A movie about Hart attending the Oklahoma! after party which he did not attend, is tedious, despite a good performance by Hawke, Why make a fictional film about a talented lyricist when there is so much truth to tell? Rated: 5/10 Oct 28, 2025 Full Review Brian Bromberger Bay Area Reporter It’s a penetrating and at times flawed elegiac triumph, which might induce ecstasy in musical theater buffs. Oct 28, 2025 Full Review Michael Cuby them. Although quite stagy by design (it’s extremely heavy on monologues), the film feels appropriately cinematic thanks to the central performance from Ethan Hawke... Maytee A For those who have an interest in theater and who would enjoy a playlike production Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/28/25 Full Review Sally Just all talk. I found it boring. I did like the music the piano player was playing in the background. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/28/25 Full Review Jonathan F Mildly entertaining. Great performances, but at some point, who cares? Honestly, there must be a VERY limited audience truly interested in this movie.... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review Shannon P Didn’t live up to the hype for me didn’t like the main character, felt “meh” about the female lead, did like the bartender but not enough to make the movie wotthwhile, Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review Kurt C Casting was terrific and Ethan Hawke -- just wow. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review robert M hard to watch, but descent. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
