Determined to reinstate the House of Stuart in Great Britain, Prince Charles Stuart (David Niven) leaves exile in France for Scotland. With support from Scottish tribal clans and aid from Lord George Murray (Jack Hawkins), Charles builds an army. After several victories, he meets a large British force at Culloden in a disastrous battle that scatters his forces.
