After the death of her mother, 13-year-old Cuicui (Dai Na) moves to Chadong, China, a rural town nestled in the mountains, to live with her grandfather (Feng Hanyuan). There, she obediently assists him in his duties as the community's ferryman. Meanwhile, he tries to help Cuicui, including finding a fitting husband for her. When a pair of wealthy brothers (Shi Lei, Liu Hui) both show an interest in Cuicui, her grandfather urges each to pursue the girl with the best of intentions.
