Audience Member Rich, delightful comedy about a man on the edges of gangsterdom, with a vivid visual style glamorizing urban life and cities. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member good pre-code early talkie Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I am continually amazed at how unpredictable Ford’s films can be. I guess I should have realized something was in the air when “Over There” was playing on the phonograph, but I certainly did not. I was expecting Ford’s version of Scarface. It is similar to early 30’s gangster pictures, but it’s also has many differences that place it ahead of its time. It falls more in line with the later Cagney pictures in which he plays a reformed gangster. Blending genres and tricking audiences into thinking they will see a certain type of film seems to be a commonality among many of Ford’s films. Pre-production code pictures are always interesting as well, although this one is reasonably tame. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Clunky early talky with stiff performances. A neat premise with the gangsters being sent to war, but it just never plays out. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Solid gangsterfilm, men kan inte mäta sig med de stumfilmer John Ford gjorde några år tidigare. Det tog honom nästan tio år att komma tillbaka i den formen. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
