In an alternate present day, humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Two police officers, one a human, the other an orc, embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which, in the wrong hands, could destroy everything.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bright tries to blend fantasy, hard-hitting cop drama, and social commentary -- and ends up falling painfully short of the mark on all three fronts.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Bright feels like an ambitious experiment with a noble subtext, which could easily have been made with entirely human characters. Perhaps then it might have felt less laboured and contrived. Jul 29, 2019 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Bright uses barely developed magical elements to tell a barely developed story about racism and prejudice in America. On both fronts, it fails. May 7, 2018 Full Review Radheyan Simonpillai NOW Toronto Perhaps expecting Bright to ask pertinent questions or think beyond its "Orc is the New Black" conceit was too much. As such, the limited world-building is just window-dressing for a basic survive-the-night thriller that putters along on toxic fumes Rated: 1/5 Dec 30, 2017 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Bright is certainly an attractive prospect given the talent involved, but Ayer's aggressive and ultramasculine perspective feels tired and, perhaps, outdated. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 16, 2022 Full Review Ian Brill Battleship Pretension Bright is dedicated to using promising ideas in the least imaginative ways possible. Apr 13, 2021 Full Review Kshitij Rawat The Indian Express It has a great premise, but execution is extraordinarily clumsy. It is far from the worst film of the year as many have said, but it isn't a magnificent, enlightened, and socially conscious piece of cinema it pretends to be either. Joseph F Unfortunately this movie felt sporadic at moments due to a rushed story with some plot holes. However, having a slightly comedic feel while also making notes to the issues we have in society for how different cultures treat other cultures, it was very enjoyable, made even better by having multiple award winning actor Will Smith playing our main character. I feel this movie should have been a show that way it had more time to provide background story to the audience while also showcasing the events that unfold in the movie. Giving it a 3.5/5 but I feel it could have been a 4.5 star if they formatted the storyline differently. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/21/25 Full Review Tucker H There are some bits that seem unrealistic, but then again this is hollywood. You have to learn a lot from context and really pay attention in order to understand the different characters and their motivations. But besides that its a really good movie with a lot of good humor and character arcs Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Ivan D Despite some plot holes and underdevelopment alternate fairy world, this movie carries you through its runtime like without skipping a beat. Great visuals and quite creative, which is in weight of gold this days. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/27/25 Full Review Vasqu3z V Underrated. Should get a Sequel or a Show. It has so much potential for world building. There is an interesting Lore hidden in it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Michael H This film is am overlooked gem. It took tired old gang violence tropes and put an interesting spin on them. Not usually a fan of Will Smith but he puts on a passable performance in this flick.
