In an alternate present day, humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time. Great "world-making" and character development, suspenseful, unpredictable...A sequel to "Lord of the Rings" set 2000 years later in a modern L.A. The short scene with the materialistic elves of "Elftown" was worth watching in and of itself.

Bright delivers what most see as a boring racial allegory that lands off the mark due to peoples' ignorant habit of comparing fantasy "races" to human races, when they were quite literally never meant to represent or be based off them in any way. This story is a brilliant modern spiritual successor to The Hobbit $ The Lord of the Rings, with deeply compelling and emotional performances and an over all original take on the entire fantasy film tradition. This deserves a sequel and a series.

The action was good - but there was just so much more potential to this movie than we saw. Too much time was spent on gangs and fights etc. I would have enjoyed more time devoted to the past war between the races and how that's shaped today's relations. Also, is there only 1 wand? What happened to it? What does being a Bright mean if you don't have a wand? Way too many other possibilities to explore, but instead we just got an hour of fight and chase scenes. Too bad - it had promise!!

It's hard to correct folks whose job it is to find full-throttle artistic pillars in film, that this movie is awesome. They're right, it's not some nth-level dialogue on social injustice, or a never-before-seen sci-fi epic. What is it? It's a brilliant piece of buddy-cop-drama, magic fantasy, loved-lost-regained novella, and visual delight. I love love love Joel Edgerton's Orc, in the face of bigotry, I love Will Smith's downtrodden cop schtick, I love the class structure discord and I love the magic. Give it a chance and you'll love it too.

Bright feels like an ambitious experiment with a noble subtext, which could easily have been made with entirely human characters. Perhaps then it might have felt less laboured and contrived.

Perhaps expecting Bright to ask pertinent questions or think beyond its "Orc is the New Black" conceit was too much. As such, the limited world-building is just window-dressing for a basic survive-the-night thriller that putters along on toxic fumes
