David Ehrlich indieWire It's a bond that hinges on eye-rolling coincidences, as "Samurai Soul" desperately strains to find a soul of its own. Japanese math rock band LITE offers the movie its best chance of finding one. Oct 28, 2021 Full Review Shah Shahid Comic Years Bright: Samurai Soul review praises the substance of the story, while being unable to improve on the original concept of the original movie. Nov 15, 2021 Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media So much of this world, this story, and these characters could be great, but there hasn't been enough time to build them up and give them real backstory, history, and weight. Rated: 3/5 Nov 3, 2021 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation Bright: Samurai Soul features an extremely distinct visual style, but the story itself feels far too familiar. Rated: 5/10 Oct 21, 2021 Full Review Collier Jennings But Why Tho? A Geek Community Bright: Samurai Soul may walk the same ground as the movie it's based on, but it's actually willing to explore its concept and how the setting would work in feudal Japan. Jim F I liked the original Will Smith movie for its visuals. This looks awful! All computer generated really cheaply. And it's all in something like 12 or 16 frames per second so the whole thing is incredibly choppy. The minimum for cinema is 24 to be watchable. Hand drawn animations usually find ways to reduce the number of frames they have to draw and it can look good when done well - but in a computer animation like this it just looks nasty and makes the whole thing even worse. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/12/22 Full Review bryan m A lot of people, myself included, thought Bright's world had potential even though Bright was an absolutely awful movie from start to finish. I would've liked to see them make something interesting with a world that blends fantasy and reality...but instead they made a second disappointment. At least the live-action movie had some decent visual effects. The animation on this is that clunky computer generated stuff that saves on paying animators to animate. Cheaping out has made for yet another horrific product. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A feudal version and near remake of Will Smith's "Bright". Fantastic animation style with a good soundtrack added to a lack luster storyline. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This anime movie set in the Bright universe was terrible. I hated the art style (which looked very stiff outside of action sequences and even then, it still has a clunky feel to it despite some badass moments), the Japanese voice-acting sucked (no comment on the English dub. Sorry, Shang-Chi), the music is...really something and the story is a generic adventure narrative about an odd-couple friendship travelling to a utopia (the elf girl does give off Ice Age vibes, doesn't she? I hate her and her whiny damsel-in-distress nature). There are some okay quiet moments and some cool moments during fights but Samurai Soul wasn't quite what I had in mind for the return to this universe. If they want to make an anthology film series, that's nice but I hope Netflix learns their lesson from what they did wrong in this movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member BRIGHT SAMURAI SOUL is a solid fantasy action addition to the Bright universe. The story is pretty grounded for having fantastic elements and all-powerful magic. The animation style is 3D generated with clearly defined lines. The flaws in this feature are the lack of character depth. The human and orc motivations are fairly well defined but as with the original Bright movie, they seemed to forget the elf. We understand that she's an elf who can wield powerful magic but otherwise, we don't really get to see who she is as a character. I'd be interested in more Bright movies, animated or live, just to see what more is in that world. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
