BROKE is a contemporary western following the story of True Brandywine, a bareback bronc rider clinging to his fading rodeo career. Broke was a beautiful movie, with a realism that most writers and directors don’t have the guts to make. Russell is outstanding in this. I love how his addiction was a problem, but not his only problem. Too often we just see a big spiral to rock bottom, when in reality it’s a slow slide. This movie captures that slide. All the performances were great. It should win awards.

Editing and cinematography are great. Story is good but not perfect. However, what it lacks in that department it makes up for it with heart. This movie has TONS of heart. As an under the radar indie, I have to give this one a lot of credit. It has soul, heart and humanity that I don’t see it too many movies anymore. Also showing a more rural setting with dignity and a kind of beauty in its struggles was very moving. I don’t know the movie is kind of a vibe. Loved it. Still thinking about it. Probably will for a while

Not hallmark or angel (both which I enjoy): perusing other reviews and perhaps Dennis Quaid’s billing attracted folks looking for something easier to digest? I dunno. Kinda ironic maybe bc I came in with measured expectations and found the sadness and darkness of it very surprising in a great way. It was a powerful story about resilience. Beautiful cinematography, good score and soundtrack, well edited, and incredible performances. A very well done little indie!
