Shadow and Act Staff Shadow and Act At 84 minutes, the doc feels a bit long, and it’s easy to envision a one-hour version working well for public broadcast. Still, Atlas does a fine job painting a complete picture of his subjects, and giving us a few musical treats along the way. Sep 13, 2022 Full Review Trish Crawford Toronto Star The music throughout is wonderful and you wish there was more of it, including concert footage. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 5, 2014 Full Review Nick Prigge Slant Magazine There are grudges held amid all the good will, an intention of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble to do things on their terms, and those terms stem directly from their upbringing. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 24, 2014 Full Review Rhodé Marshall City Press (South Africa) Now grown, they make music that is at once joyful, unremittingly exciting and undeniably wonderful as they raise eight brass horns to the sky. Apr 15, 2020 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters Brothers Hypnotic introduces the band as a function of their dad, his progeny, his project even as they have also become devoted artists in their own right. Mar 26, 2014 Full Review Louis Proyect rec.arts.movies.reviews A refreshing account of what it means to be a young musician more committed to an artistic vision than "making it". Audience Member I got bored. The film did not have a strong narrative. Maybe there were too many people and not enough focus on one. I'd like to see a separate film focused just on Phil Cohran. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A good but not great documentary about the eight children of Phil Cohran and their attempt to gain stardom for themselves. Without knowing if the riches are at the end of the rags, the documentary leads us to an unsatisfying conclusion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
