What to Know

Critics Consensus

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are at the top of their game in Bugonia, a bonkers entertainment that applies director Yorgos Lanthimos' whip-smart method to modern society's madness.

Audience Says

Wildly audacious, Bugonia may be the bleakest film yet in Yorgos’ filmography, sure to satiate fans of peculiar, deranged, and pessimistic satire.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting That point may be that human beings are intolerable, insignificant, and unnecessary. I guess I prefer my misanthropy more clever and less insincere. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 14, 2025 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) This takes me back to [Yorgos Lanthimos'] Dogtooth in the bold weirdness of it and the challenge of "Are you going to go with us on this trip or not?" Nov 10, 2025 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Bugonia belongs to Jesse Plemons. The desperation, the righteousness and just the sweatiness makes Teddy both magnetic and repulsive. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 5, 2025 Full Review Sheraz Farooqi CinemaDebate There is no doubt that Yorgos is one of the more inspired directors of this generation. However that imagination can sometimes turn into self-indulgence. While Emma Stone is solid in her third outing with the director, this film ultimately didn't connect. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 17, 2025 Full Review Rene Sanchez Cine Sin Fronteras Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons deliver two audacious performances in this sharp, twisted and timely satire. Charles S Overall, a very entertaining movie! Unexpectedly violent and jarring, but captivating nonetheless, and kept my attention throughout. Great acting, and some memorable scenes (especially the spaghetti dinner one for myself!). Also, included some subtle social commentary, on mental health, political worm holes, etc. I don't regret spending the afternoon @ the cinema for this one :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Farhad Mindblowingly unhinged, such an experience. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/17/25 Full Review Vi Vi in all honesty it is the most chilling movie you can watch. it brings you back and forth, back and forth with every single aspect they throw at you. Not a kids movie but if you have grown kids it's definitely a movie that will leave you shocked and closer together in a WTF way Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review A good way to spend an afternoon Great acting and interesting characters. A twist you don't see coming. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review Joshua R Great direction. Great acting. Great soundtrack. Great costume. Great everything. Except. Writing is dumb. There is no point to this movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review Google Holy hell, the performance Jesse Plemmons gives in this movie is unlike anything I have seen from him. This is one of my favorite movies of the year. It is so weird and well made and beautiful. highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
