Kate Erbland The Dissolve Decker's sure hand and unique style keep Butter On The Latch swirling onward into weirder, woolier territory. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 17, 2014 Full Review Nicolas Rapold New York Times "Butter on the Latch" thrives on its casually true snapshots of confusion and connection. Nov 13, 2014 Full Review Jenni Miller AV Club The film's world is beautiful and scary, but also as intimate as a childhood sleepover. Rated: B+ Nov 13, 2014 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) The DYI feel adds to the otherworldliness of the setting, taking mumblecore to its most extreme. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Rodrigo Perez The Playlist ...until the filmmaker can include some kind of adhesive, narrative or otherwise, that can glue her disparate ideas together meaningfully, all that one is left with is evocative images and elusive auras that never truly or satisfyingly add up to much. Rated: C- Feb 21, 2014 Full Review Jon Frosch France24 One of the pleasures of this intoxicating, at times terrifying 65-minute film is the director's refusal to spell out where she's going and what it all means. Audience Member So goddam annoying. That folk music, the drab improvised dialogue. The unflattering cinematography. The lack of anything scary or creepy. Disgusting amplified sounds of gross people necking. Just. Awful. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Josephine Decker's film is like walking into someone's dream (or nightmare) and gifted with Ashley Connor's disorienting cinematography -- creates a unique and highly intimate experimental film. A highly visceral film experience that one will not easily forget. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Josephine Decker is a terribly incompetent filmmaker who clearly has no understanding of the basic function of a camera or how it works, as she exhibits in this empty and insufferable waste of time an awful sense of framing and apparently believes that lack of focus is "artsy."
