Kate Cameron New York Daily News Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize novel, The Caine Mutiny, has been made into a stirring film by Stanley Kramer. Rated: 4/4 Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Edwin Schallert Los Angeles Times Both Johnson and MacMurray are bound to win special accolades for their offbeat portrayals in the adaptation of the Herman Wouk novel. Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Mae Tinee Chicago Tribune I think the audience of millions created by the book will not be disappointed. Those who are innocent of the troubles aboard the Caine will find this version of them engrossing. Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Virginia Graham The Spectator The Caine Mutiny is a finely rounded, compact piece of work, intelligently written, admirably acted and directed with the minimum of fuss. Apr 19, 2024 Full Review Mandel Herbstman Motion Picture Herald (Exhibitors Herald) It is to the everlasting credit of the motion picture industry... that in recent months there have been so many excellent translations into screen terms of great books. Standing preeminently high in that category [is] The Caine Mutiny. Leaburn O Bogart is excellent and very convincing. The dilemma is good and all runs smoothly until the final half hour. Unfortunately the courtroom drama is mediocre, whilst the ending is melodramatic and a real disappointment. Watched on DVD. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/29/24 Full Review Grant H One of my favourites with Humphrey Bogart showing his class, taking on an unsympathetic role, brilliantly revealing his character's foibles. The rest of the cast is similarly strong, with Van Johnson and Jose Ferrer as particular stand-outs. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Nawt W A very good drama with conflicted characters and a great flip of the entire narrative by the end. It is very difficult to disregard how much Bogart makes the whole picture blossom. His performance and his mental state are immensely believable because he never goes off into unhinged yelling. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/30/23 Full Review Jack V Starts off slow but it's all worth it in the end. Great drama with great acting. This movie inspired a famous scene from Better Call Saul. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review klr d An American classic. Nearly perfect military courtroom procedural. Bogart and Ferrer deserved Oscars for their work. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/21/23 Full Review Gary L It was well done, well directed, well acted. I was particularly impressed with Kiefer Sutherland whose performance was nuanced and intelligence, especially because he had the ghost of Humphrey Bogart's 1953 performance hanging over his head. I might quibble a little. The uncertain looks of the judges and the prosecutor were a little early. Queeg's breakdown needed to unfold more slowly. Greenwald's assassination of Queeg was telegraphed too early. But I am quibbling. It was a worthy and professional job throughout. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
