Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Adjani is possessed in this movie. It is not one of those leisurely costume dramas in which people in beautiful costumes move through elegant rooms. Her eyes always look haunted. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 1, 2000 Full Review Rene Jordan El Nuevo Herald (Miami) A film that's missing as much as it has leftover. [Full review in Spanish] Nov 18, 2022 Full Review Elizabeth Pincus Sojourner A big, wet, handsome picture, as sloppy as the mounds of clay from which the film's protagonist sculpts her twisted forms. Sep 11, 2019 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com [VIDEO ESSAY] To comprehend the impact of Camille Claudel's artistic achievements is to share in a spiraling struggle with insanity that consumes her before our eyes Rated: A+ Jun 12, 2011 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Isabelle Adjani received a Best Actress Oscar for playing the "mad" French sculptress in this overblown biopic Rated: B Apr 8, 2011 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com Rated: 5/5 Mar 8, 2008 Full Review Read all reviews

william d The film plods along at a snail's pace and the dialog is dull. By the time the film got interesting, i.e. when Claudel begins losing her grip on reality, I had checked out of this nearly three hour long snoozer. Too bad, because I began with a strong interest in the subject matter. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A haunting dive into the life of an artist ahead of her time, struggling with her own identity while love interferes with creativity. Ostracizing herself, she allows herself to believe the delusions in her head. This movie cements just how great an actress Adjani is, she's phe-no-me-nal in this. The way she let's herself loose in the moment of emotions is breathtaking. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Compelling depiction of artists with passion for their art and for love. When the love is rejected, abandoned the feelings are as deep. My words aren't eloquent but Adjani's performance is brilliant. She was one of the youngest actresses in France to have honors bestowed on her.The character inhabits her with all the complexities of how an artist perceives the world and becomes compulsive to create. Adjani's depiction of a passion that consumes her can't be reduced to "don't think he's really giving up anything for you" because that is not how she was created. Magnificent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Epic in scope and epic in range for a remarkable Adjani and Depardieu; sweeping in romanticism and tragedy Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review steve d well acted but not especially interesting or pleasant. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review andrey k Very depressing but also quite brilliant in showcasing the grandeur of French cinema and her talented performers. You just can't be left unmoved by the almost irresistibly beautiful visual imagery. And should I even begin talking about Isabelle Adjani and Gerard Depardieu? That is where the true acting in cinema lies, not in Hollywood, true emotions, not just empty professionalism. The complexity of the story depicted is matched with the complexity of the art, of which Camille Claudel was a brilliant executor.
