grey g This film's does disservice to its subject in two ways. It appears more documentary relying on Carlotta's autobiography rather than focusing on the struggles of transitioning to female that she had. The story comes across as pedestrian and disjointed; relying on vanilla highlights that the biography presented so as not to alienate the older generation of readers. Worse was casting. There was something insulting about the staring actress being a born female to portray the titular character. It wasn't done in the Danish Girl or the Spanish TV show Veneno. This is a kind of 'black or yellow face" which Hollywood is famous for even up to recent times. Why was it done here? The answer is who the movie is targeting - people who would happily attend a Les Girls show and crane their necks at beautiful boys in frocks while clinging to gender stereotypes and homophobia. Only for voyeuristic viewers. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/18/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
