Jessica Kiang Variety A pleasant but linear, single-issue movie, which is compassionate and deeply felt, but also tidy and tamed, just like first love isn't. May 23, 2018 Full Review Leslie Felperin The Hollywood Reporter Ultimately both insipid and arguably too sympathetic for some viewers to the homophobic attitudes of the family. May 18, 2018 Full Review Wendy Ide Screen International This energetic first feature from Arantxa Echevarria combines a vibrantly realised sense of place and Spain's gypsy community with assured work with a cast of non-professional actors. May 16, 2018 Full Review Ben Turner The Pink Lens With all the vim and passion of southern Europe, expect raised voices, Latin flair and a lot of earnest intensity. Rated: 4/5 Aug 31, 2021 Full Review Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall Writer-director Arantxa Echevarria has a terrific eye for authenticity, placing a bold narrative in a place and time that's strikingly honest. Rated: 4/5 Jul 15, 2021 Full Review Alex Hudson Exclaim! Their tender interactions have echoes of a Jane Austen novel, where even subtle touches and passing comments carry tremendous weight. Frans G After some obstacles two young roma girls fall in love with each other. It's an unmentionable taboo in the traditional roma world. Very realistic and purely portrayed and filmed and not provocative. Expertly made and with a lot of daring, just by choosing this loaded topic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review charming m Stunningly acted atmospheric take on 'love against the odds' amid the grinding monotony of life for the tight-knit Roma community in Madrid's congested 'barrios' - neighbourhoods where everyone knows your business and there seems nowhere to escape to. Such a good and profound film that on second viewing i noticed small gestures that had gone unnoticed first time round, Zaira Morales and Rosy Rodriguez are simply outstanding as the star-crossed lovers, while Director and writer Arantxa Echevarría gets the raucous life of the Spanish capital's Roma spot on. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Audience Member I thought I was very well done pretty accurate I think. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member it's interesting to know the gypsy universe and sadly the reality that is shown, but talkin about the script and construction I didn't see many new elements Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member good and exciting movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member The love story is predictable and not groundbreaking: I saw it for the look into Roma culture, which it ostensibly provides.
