High school can be tough for many teenagers, but for Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), it's especially hellish. A shy and awkward teen being raised by a religious zealot (Julianne Moore), Carrie is frequently the target of bullies. But Carrie has a secret talent: She can make things move with her mind. One fateful night, an especially cruel prank at her senior prom pushes her over the edge, and Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers on all who get in her way.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It boasts a talented cast, but Kimberly Peirce's "reimagining" of Brian De Palma's horror classic finds little new in the Stephen King novel -- and feels woefully unnecessary.

Andi Zeisler Bitch Media Carrie resonates for women in particular because it touches on so much of the horror of becoming female that it's almost too real. I love that Kimberly Piece chose to honor that horror faithfully, even if it doesn't make for a radical re-visioning. Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Moretz plays Carrie as either a constantly petrified, meek outcast or a grimacing destroyer. Peirce fails to build a connection between audience and protagonist. Aug 14, 2019 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com A tired, unneeded copy of Brian De Palma's far superior work, with the small changes it makes adding nothing of significance. Rated: C Apr 23, 2015 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The new Carrie offers no fresh insights into the material and delivers far less than what De Palma achieved both thematically and cinematically. James B An improvement of the 2002 remake the 2013 Carrie does offer a nice modern retelling or the story but falls short of the original. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/05/25 Full Review Rami A The 2013 remake of Stephen King's Carrie is one of the worst remakes ever made. It tells the story in a way that fails to make viewers sympathize with Carrie. In fact, it makes you think she's a nuisance that her mother and the students have to deal with. This interpretation strips away the emotional depth that made the original so impactful. Instead of portraying Carrie as a tragic figure grappling with her powers and isolation, the film reduces her to a mere caricature of teenage angst. The characters around her lack the complexity needed to evoke genuine sympathy, leaving audiences disconnected from her struggle and ultimately making the storyline feel flat and unengaging. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/03/25 Full Review Julian S This CARRIE remake plays like a competent cover band—technically on point, but missing the soul that made the original unforgettable. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review Stephen C Failure in 1 hour and 39 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why remake a classic?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/14/25 Full Review Jules N Comment on peut autant massacrer une scène aussi iconique Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Alex S Carrie is an absolute bland remake. Very little fire in this film but rather an excuse to boost Chloe Grace Moretz’s career as a rising young actress. There are many things that are missed in attempting to recreate what made the original so thrilling, shocking, and terrifying, especially considering Sissy Spacek’s unforgettable performance in the original. There was no attempt to bring something fresh to a classic. Grading: D+ Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/25 Full Review Read all reviews
