What to Know

Critics Consensus

It boasts a talented cast, but Kimberly Peirce's "reimagining" of Brian De Palma's horror classic finds little new in the Stephen King novel -- and feels woefully unnecessary.

Andi Zeisler Bitch Media Carrie resonates for women in particular because it touches on so much of the horror of becoming female that it's almost too real. I love that Kimberly Piece chose to honor that horror faithfully, even if it doesn't make for a radical re-visioning. Jan 20, 2021 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint Moretz plays Carrie as either a constantly petrified, meek outcast or a grimacing destroyer. Peirce fails to build a connection between audience and protagonist. Aug 14, 2019 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com A tired, unneeded copy of Brian De Palma's far superior work, with the small changes it makes adding nothing of significance. Blu B It's fundamentally ok but it does NOTHING better than the original. The direction is just alright but compared to De Palmas direction it's not even close. Everything here is basic. The editing between telekenesis outbursts is alright but isn't as sharp as the 76' one. The biggest problem here is Moretz as Carrie. I don't believe for a second watching her she would be a social outkast. It's like watching someone who is trying to be a awkward introvert after reading about it and studying but never actually feeling like it in real life. Or like watching a popular girl trying to act like a unpopular one. Outside of that she's alright but man it would've been an almost impossible task for anyone to come close to Sissy because the casting is just perfect. Moore is the one good thing in this and unfortunately she doesn't get a lot of time. I wish this would've explored the mother daughter relationship a bit more because of how good she is instead of copying the original by following the same beats. The CGI special effects are NO WHERE near as good as the practical effects/tricks used in the first either. This feels like it focuses more on Chris who isn't as interesting as Carrie or the Mom. The whole issue really can be summed up comparing the prom blood scene where it turns into a horror film in both versions. Comparing DePalma's 15 minutes of no dialouge at all buildup and turn to how this one does it shows all the issues. Basic direction, CGI effects that take you out of the expierence, Moretz feeling miscast, and the editing isn't as sharp. The end scare change is a bit lame too. Skip This. By no means is this broken or the worst remake ever. It just has no right to exist. Stick with the 76' Classic. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Michael H My favorite version of Carrie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/31/24 Full Review Dani G I remember that the original didn't thrill me so much... But this remake is pretty bad Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Lúcio Leonardo P Despite the metaphor of the original being different from the remake and the latter having continuation errors, I thought the film was cool. The original talks about the power of the female sex, sex itself and religion. The new one, I think it talks more about bullying and its consequences. And in this new version of Carrie, we have a super blessed mother who doesn't teach her anything other than religion, so Carrie becomes an introverted and isolated girl from the class, which makes her a laughing stock and doing these things with people with powers of telekinesis, can turn out to be really dangerous, not because they are bad but because they are misunderstood. Actress Chloë Grace Moretz is impeccable in her protagonist role (although she doesn't think her face is ideal, as she is beautiful, but she showed that she has talent), Julianne Moore is also not far behind in the role of the extremely religious mother and the others, they are mere supporting characters to die at the hands of Carrie, the stranger. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/29/24 Full Review Hieu D The remake is quite watchable. Good technique. The acting of some actors is not good. but still worth watching. In addition, there are creative details about very modern social networks Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Samantha J The movie was good, I have just finished it today.
