An effective spine-tingler despite clear budget constraints, Caveat suggests a deliciously dark filmmaking future for writer-director Damian Mc Carthy.

David Ehrlich indieWire "Caveat" exists in a liminal space between genres, which is fitting for a film about the skeletons that might hide inside the walls of an old house. Rated: B- Jun 16, 2021 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News Things get a bit wonky along the final stretch, and the Irishman can't quite stick the landing. But there's plenty here to admire and it will be exciting to see where he goes next. Rated: B Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times "Caveat" is like a gothic horror tone poem, with pungent notes of decay. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Jessica Scott We Who Walk Here With ever-growing dread, Caveat suggests terrors beyond the nebulous borders of its frightening narrative, causing viewers to ask themselves how far the walls of a haunted house truly extend. Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Chris Ward Flickering Myth Caveat is a movie that will no doubt give those of a nervous disposition the heebie-jeebies, but just dont analyse the plot too much as it does take the edge off an otherwise solid directorial debut. Mar 23, 2022 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film This is a massively overambitious first feature which really struggles as a result, but nevertheless showcases talents worthy of notice. Adam B Loved this movie. Atmospheric, mysterious, low-key, clever, creepy, and some of the most genuinely frightening aesthetics I've seen that competes only with Evil Dead. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Thirdi A very creepy start to finish. lots of loose ends towards the end but either way I was nervous the whole time and thats what I like Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Steven Z Literally what??? Overreliance on soundtrack, and even that was barely serviceable. Tries to do so many things with the plot, set up so many possibilities only to fulfill none of them. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/24 Full Review Mike S This movie is worthy of watching many times. Absolutely brilliant. Not only is it wonderfully creepy, but the plot is highly complex. I think after my first watch, I didn't fully grasp this tight-nit thriller. It is so rare that a film really gives you a thrill here and there, and the more I understood the film and the motives of each character, the more and more I liked it. Audiences are stupid, but if you appreciate a clever creeper, "buy it" because you're going to want to watch it more than once. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/25/23 Full Review Peter W Caveat delivers a big thumbs up on many elements of a horror movie. The atmosphere, performances, and horror are fun, and I had a blast watching this movie. As a directional debut, I left feeling generally impressed! With so many enjoyable elements on the screen, I was saddened that a few mysteries within the plot were vague or left me with unanswered questions. No matter, this is an applaud-worthy debut, and I still enjoyed watching it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/23 Full Review Logan L This is one of those movies that is so frustrating because you know it could've been so much better if the writer/director had just followed through with the ideas presented here. Seriously, it's like he got 3/4 of the way through writing a great horror movie and then said "f*** it, we're going to throw in some all too common tropes, some weirdness, and the illusion of a resolution and call it a day." The setting was there, the set up was there, the genuine creepiness of it all was there, but it simply didn't tie up any of the loose ends it needed to to be a good horror movie. I am so damn tired of these kinds of movies, where you get invested and think it's going to be really good because all the pieces are in place to make your jaw absolutely drop just for whomever is in charge to flip the board over near the end and essentially give the audience a middle finger. Three stars for the acting, the set/setting, the tension, the creepy rabbit doll thing and even more creepy dead mother, though the latter never got explained at all as to why she did, or even could do, what she was doing. And to add, what was the deal with the drumming rabbit? What exactly was it sensing? Again… sooo many unanswered questions that could've easily made this a 5-star horror flick. There are good films that leave it up to the audience to fill in the blanks (e.g. Skinamarink) and then there are films that just make you go, "so, what the hell…?" Caveat is the latter, to my significant chagrin. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
