To put the name into context; Chandu is an infantile version of the character's name. In the way someone might be called Chucky instead of Charles. This is because he is the village simpleton. It can therefore feel like Forest Gump at times. Still a very good feeling good boxing movie. Like someone has already mentioned it is 'Old School's storytelling.
