      Critics Consensus

CHiPS abandons the endearing innocence of its source material, using the titular cop show's premise as a setup for aggressively lowbrow gags that prove only mildly arresting at best.

Martyn J Not as bad as people made out. Watchable and dax did a good job. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/24 Full Review Tristan T If I had not been among company that wanted to see this I would have turned it off. I've not seen the original series, so my gripes with this are not due complaints about that. Instead it's that the humor in this movie is so juvenile and wildly lowbrow jokes that it may only entertain a 16 year-old who still giggles when genitalia are mentioned. They only needed three days to restore all I had lost.Knowing that everything I've lost has been found gives me such a great deal of faith in this hack expert and gives me such renewed optimism. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/23 Full Review Sean R This movie gets a really bad rap, and I'm surprised people haven't discovered this gem over time. CHiPs is hilarious and the action is intense and very well-directed. The fact that you can clearly tell Dax is doing all his motorcycle riding and stunts makes the action more exciting. If this movie wasn't called CHiPs and had nothing to do with the TV show it would have received by audiences as a great buddy cop movie like 21 Jump Street or The Other Guys. Give it a chance and you may be surprised. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/22/23 Full Review StephenPaul C LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 41 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/23 Full Review Eric B The movie kinda sucked. BUT, the filmmakers weren't aiming for, say, "The Godfather", or "All About Eve", or "Annie Hall". They were aiming for a really silly comedy with a few laughs, some action, and not much more. They borrowed character material from "Lethal Weapon", and the more recent "buddy" cop films, so nothing original here. They threw a ton of off-color jokes at the wall and some stuck. Add some raunch, plenty of breasts for the boys, gobs of gross, and you get a soft-porn version of "CHiPs", with some "Reno 9/11" thrown in. Still, while I have NO problem turning off lousy movies, for some reason, I couldn't turn this one off. Great motorcycle chases, some cool explosions, and a good helping of gore with heads getting cut off, fingers shot off, and human bodies getting totally destroyed by big trucks. Smoke a joint prior to watching, and you'll love this pic. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/06/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News It is really no plot at all, merely a vehicle to allow Shepard and Pena to riff about kinky bedroom habits, homophobia and so on. Those flippant exchanges fluctuate from funny to flat. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 26, 2018 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Taken purely on its own, Chips is a wretched attempt at an action comedy. I can only imagine how it looks to viewers with emotional investment in the source material Rated: 1/5 Apr 12, 2017 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au A disclaimer reads "The California Highway Patrol does not endorse this film". It's hard to imagine anyone does. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 5, 2017 Full Review Bill Chambers Film Freak Central Me, I found Pauline Kael's review of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure echoing in my ears: "I liked the movie's unimportance. It isn't saying anything." Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Drew Dietsch FANDOM As a comedy, it's serviceable but never able to stake out something that makes it memorable. As an action film, it's a delightful throwback to a bygone era. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The crudity flows as easily as the violence in this low-IQ outing, with a special emphasis on gay panic humor and an even greater emphasis on sexist humor (this is the sort of film that suggests that if a woman isn't a 10, she might as well kill herself).
