Robert Abele Los Angeles Times It’s all highlights and lowlights, rarely interested in the in-between stuff that makes watching all the rounds of a bout so necessary to appreciating what it means to survive on the canvas. Nov 10, 2025 Full Review Heather Schwedel Slate Christy doesn’t spend enough time on Martin’s interior life. Instead, you’re left wondering whether to root for a character who often acts like a jerk, whose more human side we barely get to know. Nov 10, 2025 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle What truly propels the film is the growing realization, through both the script and Sweeney’s performance, that Christy isn’t an ordinary person blessed with an extraordinary gift... she’s an extraordinary person whose very life force is awe-inspiring. Rated: 3/4 Nov 8, 2025 Full Review Sammie Purcell Rough Draft Atlanta “Christy,” the new film directed by David Michôd and co-written by Michôd and Mirrah Foulkes, rests on the inherent high drama of Christy’s story, refusing to engage with her beyond the surface, which leads to fairly surface level performances. Nov 11, 2025 Full Review Tara McNamara Common Sense Media This biopic about the United States' first famous female boxer is a 1-2 punch: One is Sweeney's knockout performance, and two is this surprising story that most viewers aren't likely to know. Rated: 4/5 Nov 11, 2025 Full Review Alise Chaffins MacGuffin or Meaning (Substack) More than anything, Christy feels safe...What Martin has overcome is astounding, and as a West Virginian, I’m thrilled that she is having it told on the big screen. I only wish this movie could have been as bold as she is. Rated: 3/5 Nov 11, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews
