      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

As idiosyncratic as it is ambitious, Clara's Ghost can be as difficult to pin down as a spectral presence -- yet it also has a way of working itself under the skin.

Audience Member Paula Niedert Elliott is fascinating in this. She comes across as un-actorly at the same time she is totally immersed in the character. I couldn't take my eyes off her, even though the other characters were so overbearing. Some critics wrote that this was like a family movie that no one else would be interested in. I couldn't disagree more. Bridey Elliott did a wonderful job of creating a unique family vignette that makes you feel a little guilty for watching as though you're a peeping Tom who came across the scene accidentally, but you can't look away. I think it is fresh and evocative and well-done. I think everyone involved in the project accomplished what they attempted to do. I look forward to seeing more from these artists. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review kris i fascinatingly crazy and tenseful, but wouldn't call it good Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Clara's Ghost is a odd movie to understand, mainly due to the fact that the narrative switches from tense filled dread, to weird placed humor from its actors. Can't fully recommend a movie that doesn't know what it wants to be ! Teo Bugbee New York Times Over time... visual slackness proves to be a sinuous strength. It prevents the film from indicating its intentions, which would remove the mystery from the tense relationships it depicts. Feb 13, 2019 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture A twisted, slippery little whisper of a thing that refuses to let itself be easily defined. Dec 10, 2018 Full Review Kristy Puchko Riot Material Bridey Elliott has made a slippery psychological horror-comedy that begins with family and showbiz, then slides into an empathetic journey into female hysteria. Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Kudos to Elliott and DP Markus Mentzer for aspiring higher than the usual comedy mode of locking down the camera at a few unexceptional angles, then cutting for coverage on the best improv take... Jan 6, 2023 Full Review Michael Colbert Film Inquiry Clara's Ghost skillfully holds the audience in its grip, and everyone realizes how everything has been more serious all along. Feb 9, 2019 Full Review Andy Crump Paste Magazine It's often said that going into business with family is a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad idea, but Clara's Ghost provides an exception to this particular rule.
