Gary Arnold Washington Post "Cloak & Dagger" is never as adept or perceptive as you'd like it to be, but it's got what members of the critical fraternity traditionally characterize as "a little something." May 10, 2017 Full Review Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times Cloak and Dagger is fun for adults as well as older kids, thanks to the imaginative writing (by Tom Holland) and direction (by Richard Franklin). Rated: 4/5 Oct 29, 2012 Full Review Janet Maslin New York Times The last thing we need right now is another movie about a boy caught up in the world of computer games - but ''Cloak and Dagger,'' while fitting that mold, is clever and enjoyable anyhow. Rated: 3/5 May 25, 2004 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a decent-enough endeavor that's generally more watchable than it has any right to be. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 1, 2021 Full Review Rob Vaux Mania.com For a movie so obsessed with the line between reality and make-believe, it never knows which side it wants to be on. Rated: C Aug 13, 2014 Full Review TV Guide A film with much to recommend it, Cloak and Dagger feels like a Hitchcock movie produced by Walt Disney. Kevin L It's amazing how people will watch something from 1984 and not put themselves in that era of when this was made and why this was made . I will never understand why people can't just watch a movie without the need for picking something apart or they compare with some modern movies with modern technology, like seriously this is 1984 not 2024 . Also if you didn't grow up with this then and your incapable of transporting yourself back in time then you won't understand this at all . See we didn't have movies on demand, we didn't watch TV , we played outside with our imagination and that's exactly what this movie brings is your imagination and if you don't have that then again your not going to see this movie or understand it . Also why are people going on about it being PG and violent, like are you serious when you have more blood , F bombs , nudity or almost nude on everything you watch now days no matter the rating. Poltergeist is a PG movie and so was a lot of others back in the day so I don't get the point of picking something apart just because you don't understand something. People love mocking what they don't understand apparently. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Audience Member It’s just a game right? Director Richard Franklin makes one of the many action/video game inspired films of the 1980s among the lines of WarGames and Starfighter It stars Henry Thomas of E.T. fame and Dabney Coleman Hal Osborn is a workaholic father His son Davey loves to play Cloak & Dagger on the arcade system and Jack Flack is the hero Davey then happens to see a murder take place involving sensitive documents and he’s hunted down by assassins Davey imagines Jack showing up to help him escape from them The middle of this was kind of a drag, it’s also quiet violent and intense for a kids movie I’ll say It wasn’t until the last half things got really intense with the least likely antagonists you’d never expect and a pretty decent action set piece The ending is pretty weak as it just stops all of a sudden But the true saving grace is Thomas himself as he’s fighting his loneliness with his childhood imagination Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Jay H A pre-teen is grief-stricken over the loss of his mother. His father works long hours and is never around. He has an imaginary friend that looks like his dad, a?" nd a real friend who is an adult. He witnesses a murder, he's nearly stabbed, he's shot at, he's knocked out with chloroform, he's put in a car trunk with a dead body, he's threatened with being shot in the knees and stomach, he shoots and kills a guy, he's taken hostage on an airplane that also has a bomb on it... did I mention this is rated PG and intended for kids? I'll bet "where's my cocaine?" was heard a lot on this movie set. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Mark M One of my all-time favorite films from childhood. If you want an all-out adventure that pulls no punches, give this a try. Family films were certainly different before the Disney-fied era of the 90s. Here you've got uber-talented Henry Thomas carrying the whole picture, dodging bad guys (like, really bad guys), and even ends up having to shoot and kill one of them himself. You don't see kids on screen doing that these days. This is also one of the most poignant father/son features I've ever seen and it really holds up today. Strangely, not a lot of people have seen it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/11/23 Full Review MrEatrocks4fun At first glance this trip through nostalgia sparked a comfortable and "at home" vibe that was incredibly lit. But that quickly flipped to CAP. In fact, it was fr fr "not having a good time". It turns out our protagonist may be suffering severe Schizophrenia. The climatic heart pounding conclusion may be one of the most compelling exercises in mental health awareness to date. Let's just say we leave with fewer people than when we started. Do yourself a favor, strap in and thank me later. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/01/23 Full Review Yoosik Ethan O I have a soft spot for this one. I loved this movie growing up in the 80's and I would watch it again and again. It was a thrill watching a boy my age living a real adventure dodging bullets and being the hero instead of watching it on TV. This takes me back. Michael Murphy was a great villain in this and Dabney Coleman played dual roles very well. Today, I analyze it a little more. Like with all the people who saw the bad guys chasing these kids, did anyone think to call the police? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
