The dialogue is stilted, the plot as thin as Banderas's hair, and even the plethora of twists can't rescue the movie from mediocrity. Go to Full Review

For all the slickness and the surfeit of twists, there isn't a modicum of suspense, nor much spark between the leads. Go to Full Review

Don't let the big names fool you: The Code is limp enough a thriller to deserve the direct-to-video treatment it's received. Go to Full Review

Fifty T Nov 6 When Stellar Casts Can't Save Stale Scripts: The Code (aka Thick As Thieves) proves that star power alone cannot overcome fundamental storytelling failures. Despite Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas, and Radha Mitchell headlining, this is an avoidable heist thriller. 5.5/10. Freeman sleepwalks through his "veteran thief on one last job" role with zero conviction. Banderas seems miscast entirely, his Spanish persona jarring against the New York setting. Only Mitchell demonstrates genuine effort, though her underwritten love-interest role offers nothing to work with. The complete lack of chemistry between leads is fatal for a film requiring audience investment in relationships. Ted Humphrey's script recycles every heist movie cliché without adding fresh perspective. The "impossible" heist feels routine, the twists arrive exactly when expected, and character motivations shift purely for plot convenience. Director Mimi Leder (capable of far better work on ER) delivers lifeless, TV-movie direction that wastes the $25 million budget. Most damning: nothing feels new or exciting. Every beat, every character arc, every "surprise" has been executed better in countless predecessors. The film neither invests you in its characters nor thrills you with its execution. It's a paint-by-numbers heist film that never justifies its existence beyond providing employment for its cast. A thoroughly avoidable waste of talent. It was better than I had imagined it would be, but there were a couple of things I didn't like. The story was good, and I liked most of the characters. Morgan Freeman's attendance carries the film, but I also enjoyed Rade Serbedzija's convincing crime boss performance. My main problem was with casting Antonio Banderas as the lead, because his Spanish personality traits did not seem a good fit for this movie set in New York, and the use of Spanish musical themes made this worse. I appreciated the sountrack's use of t.A.T.u 'Not gonna get us' which I thought fitted perfectly, and added edgy excitement and dynamism. My other issue was the lack of quality lighting. The movie has a lot of nighttime and indoor scenes, and it was a constant struggle attempting to see what was going on. Putting those things aside, I did enjoy the movie, but I think with a few tweaks it should have been much better. See more carlos t 01/13/2023 Minha opinião: Um filme de ladrões, e temos Banderas e Freeman. Faltou aqui. Roteiro e enredo faltou, faltou química, inteligência e aquela pitada. Vale apena assistir? Se não tiver outra opção. Just the usual stuff, even the greatest twists are predictable from the beginning. See more Read all reviews
