After being stripped of all property and forcibly placed in internment camps in 1942, young American citizens of Japanese descent were presented with a paradoxical proposition: They could remain in confinement, or they could enlist in the U.S. military and fight for the very government that suspected them capable of espionage and treachery. Many young interned men chose to enlist and became a part of what would become the heavily decorated, all-Japanese-American 442nd Infantry.
