Unfortunately Sorrentino's often playful assault on genre conventions is sabotaged by an ostentatious visual style that alludes to the work of such disparate directors as Antonioni and Scorsese but is little more than a bag of empty tricks. Go to Full Review

A story told as much through mood, sentiment and image than through a writer's more conventional tool of dramaturgy. Go to Full Review

Sorrentino wins all bets we'll buy his film's more existential, literary, romantic ambitions because of the sheer ecstasy--the great beauty--of his style. Style becomes substance--the cuts and angles create narrative, the screen's surface opens up depths. Go to Full Review

Two superfluous sub-plots notwithstanding, this atmospheric character study is clearly the work of a very talented filmmaker. Go to Full Review

helder f @uniquecliches Jan 20 A story of a man who lives a relatively isolated life in a hotel in Switzerland, estranged from his family and most people, and often pensive about his life. The most obvious consequence of love is that his life or lack of life changes as his interest in a hotel worker appears reciprocated. A very good movie that, for the most part, is more like a poem or ballet performance. Aesthetically pleasing with great music, interesting photography, and scarce dialogue. The needed information is delivered at the few moments of a relatively more meaningful dialogue. While I appreciate it for its aesthetics and poignant comments on life, it does progress slowly and not always very logically. The end is, for sure, not very logical. See more Read all reviews
